Food and gas prices are gonna go up after a year of lockdowns across the world.  Who would have thought?  As if some of this hasn't happened already?

Brother, EVERYTHING is going up in prices, many have already gone up. Last March, we could buy 6x6x12' treated wood for $17.00 each, then they went up to $27.00 each about the first of the summer, NOW they are $82.98.00 each, plus taxes! We install fences and the prices in one year have gone out of sight! That's just one example, I could many more. Just received a letter from one of our suppliers yesterday telling us all of our irrigation parts are going up at least 25 %! The cost of doing business is really going way up and also our workers are demanded more because the cost of living is going out of the roof and I fully understand. The cost of each employer is going way up because of INSURANCE, etc. I just told my son I'm out here totally by year's end..... work hard, smart and you MIGHT have a little leftover when it is all said and done~OR, the present powers that be, might put many businesses out before it is all over with.

My gas prices have jumped way up already once Biden cut the Keystone pipeline . I was paying about $2.29 a gallon and now
I am at $2.99 a gallon.  Wont talk about food prices.

Hey Red. I got a fencing question. How come if a person uses treated cedar posts for a fence that they will twist sometimes 90 degrees from their original orientation. Craziest thing I have ever seen. What use is treated lumber that does that?

A few reasons: Properly drying or curing wood to prevent warping~Don't allow partially dry lumber to quickly regain moisture. Don't dry lumber too slowly (doing so could worsen any bowing and other warping) Don't over dry lumber, which can lead to cracking, splits and end grain checking. Some lumber companies have MUCH BETTER lumber than the MAIN suppliers. Smaller companies tend to have MUCH BETTER treated wood than larger ones. Find a good company you can trust~Mom and POPS are generally the best believe it or not. NEVER use NAILS, ALWAYS use screws~they have them for treated wood.... last but not least, ALWAYS handpick your own lumber to avoid ones that are already warping. Treated lumber is much like concrete~most treated wood over many years will warp a little, concrete WILL CRACK it is just a matter WHEN.  We do a lot of concrete and ALWAYS tell our customers that concrete cracks and we cannot be responsible for it. Overall one can minimize cracks but cannot stop them over a period of time...they ARE coming.

This is one of the reasons why I try my hardest never to order extra lumber when doing a job, last time I ordered 2"x12"16' & 6"x6" x12' PT lumber, I had it all assembled on the post saddles, caps, and joist hangers inside of a week. Deflection was minimal and I didn't end up with a bunch of extra lumber that would sit and warp to the point of being useless.

Regrading lumber prices; in a word-INSANE!

It is only going to get worse.  99.995 of everything you buy includes a cost of shipping.  The cost of shipping is intimately tied to the cost of fuel.  The communists in charge have just caused the price of fuel to rise; and that is far from over.

What circumstances is treated lumber the preferred choice on ANY kind of project. I assume fence posts is NOT one of them. Never seen a straight fence post made out of treated lumber. On cedar fences here, they are now all built with galvanized pipe posts.

I used treated lumber to build my 16'x28' deck, the deck boards are cedar and all of the upright posts were wrapped in 1/4" cedar cladding. The cedar was coated with Cutek oil. Basically, the PT lumber was used only for the framing.


PT treated lumber does not change the properties of the wood itself, the penetration is only so deep. The purpose is to protect it from the elements where untreated lumber would otherwise decay rapidly.


I use minimum 6"x6" for fence posts, a 4"x4" just doesn't cut it IMO.

The creosote treated wood they used in the rural electrification act for power poles back in the 30's was in great shape 70 years later.  Saw plenty of brass tags from 1935.

You very well may be correct, obviously they treated them with a higher dose of it back then.

Yep.  In high school and college, I worked summers on track gangs, replacing rotted railroad ties.   They were permeated with creosote, and while it lasts a long time, in a matter of years, they have to be replaced.   They were buried in gravel, and subject to considerable mechanical stress, which might have had some effect.

Yes.   And I have no doubt that the mechanical stresses on a railroad tie are much higher than on a telephone pole.

There are stresses of attachments as well.  Industry conventions for burying poles is 10% +2 ft.  So a 45' pole would typically be 37.5' at the top, with 6.5' underneath.

I do know that in the olden days of rural electrification they creosote method was probably a little more robust than in modern times.

Oh, it does.  Not like the forces of a few trains a day on ties.   They get quite a beating.  I'm always impressed by the strength wood used for that purpose.
