Rom 5:2  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Rom 5:3  And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

Rom 5:4  And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
Rom 5:5  And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

This touches me closly... When Daddy was in Bible School He would say 'I prayed for patience and God gave me Becky! '  I was the PK the jokes are about  (Well a lot of them)

Nevertheless

Jesus said in Matthew 7, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"

Since patience is a fruit of the Spirit it is safe to say that it is a good thing, so if we ask God for patience He will give it to us. There is no guarantee that we will like the method He chooses to give it to us, though.

Synonyms for the word patience found in the N.T. are as follows.  Longanimity, as in slowness to anger, passion, etc. as in long-suffering, forbearance, endurance,

Generally,  Rom.2:4, "The riches of his goodness and --- longsuffering."  Rom.9:22. 2 Cor.6:6. Gal.5:22. Eph.4:2. Col.3:12. 1 Tim.1:16. 2 Tim.3:10, 4:2. 1 Pet.3:20. 2 Pet.3:15. Jer.15:15. Spec. patient endurance of evil, patience, Col.1:11, "unto all patience."  Heb.6:12. James 5:10. Sept. Isa.57:15.

When people say not to ask for patience because you will get trials, they can mean this in humor, knowing how they themselves asked for patience but then got more trials, instead of getting patience for handling just the trials they already had. So, this is an irony, for them, and they may be just seeing some humor in it, how God does not work inhe way we might be asking and expecting.

But in Romans 5:2-3 Paul does say, "tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character".

But if we are mainly involved with problems that get in the way of the lives we want to live (John 12:25), this can be focusing our patience too much on just solving our own problems (2 Corinthians 5:15). We need to get into God's love that has us caring just as much about others as ourselves. And then our tribulations will not only be what interferes with our own lives or with ones who are our favorites. "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you?" Jesus says in Matthew 5:46.

In God's love, our patience is different, having us caring about others and being even cheerful and creative to take care of problems. So, there is patience that is a characteristic of God's love. Love "suffers long, and is kind," we have in 1 Corinthians 13:4. God's patience is kind, not just stubbornly struggling and suppressing ourselves not to blow up, etc. But *in* us we have sweet gentle self-control for keeping on while in problems, and we have His love's creativity and You, LORD, making the way for us to take advantage of trouble and use it to help people, like Joseph did (Genesis 37-50). And we can share this with others >

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Chirst, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

So, as we are being patient through problems that we go through for Jesus, we can be encouraged that we can use this experience to help others through their problems. This is what Jesus did. "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:15) So, Jesus our Groom came here to earth, partly in order to go through all that we go through, here, so now He can feel for us and minister to us all that got Him through His problems.

So, we are in this priesthood of Jesus (1 Peter 2:5&9); so, like Jesus has done, we also go through things so we become better able to help others who are going through things.

   Sherry you asked if it were ok to pray for patience.  sherry I want you to know that you may pray for any and every
   thing.  But in doing so in all things give thanks and praises.  GOD BLESS YOU.

James 1:2  My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
James 1:3  Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
James 1:4  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

I pray for patience all the time and God gives it to me.

"God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and to provide you with a way out." (1 Cor. 10: 13)

In other words, one can know when a prayer for patience is really answered only when faced with a trial which one overcomes confidently. Such is the equation of increasing returns!
