I can empathize with you.  Moving to a new area where you don't know anyone is very difficult.
However, I am confident someone in our little community here will be able to steer you to a great church family in the Omaha area.

This is what I come up with thru the COCN listing.

I worshiped not far north of there in Sioux City, Iowa, 1987-1995, so at least the weather I could advise you about!

Never visited in Omaha.  The only personal thing I can tell you about either group is that Gary Hutchens from Sunny Slope preached for my husband's "home church" down here for about 20 years.  He's originally from Illinois, I believe.  He's been up there about 3 years now, I think.  He's coming down here in a couple of weeks to visit & preach a gospel meeting "down the bayou".

I'll leave you to check out their web sites with little comment from me.

Well, in about another 4 months or so, it will be that time in our life again.  The military is sending us to a new home and we get to start all over again looking for a new church family.  Ya know.... that is the absolute WORST thing about the military lifestyle for me, even worse than my husband having to spend 3 months away from us in Oman this year.  We hate having to find a new congregation when we move.  Most times it seems we don't have real good luck.  Sometimes a congregation will seem just wonderful when we're visiting, but once we decide to place membership, we become invisible.

Thankfully that didn't happen where we are attending now. We love the group we are with now with a passion and if I think too much about the fact we are leaving in 4 months, I get all weepy.  My children, my husband, and I have some very close relationships here.... leaving them behind will be heartrending.

So.... those of you with experience at "church-shopping," how do you go about it?  Do you have a checklist (mental or physical) that you think about when you are visiting a congregation?  How can you tell when a congregation is "for you?"  We've had times when we thought, "WOW" about some place and then a few months later wondered what it was that made us want to be there.

Sure would like to hear others' experiences.

BTW, we will be heading to the Omaha, NE area.

I hope everything goes well during your move.  Be careful not to overdo it either.  When I moved two years ago I made myself sick with the stress and physical labor.  Take breaks and do not get stressed out if you can.

Thanks, Janine.  I have found both those websites, as well as the site for the Bellevue church of Christ (Bellevue is a suburb of Omaha, just outside the Air Force base).  I have already formed an opinion based on the websites which church I am most interested in.  We will see if the websites do their congregations justice!!!

The whole "church-shopping" process is just NOT fun....  seems like either we are some place with almost no choices, or if there are a lot of choices, no one "winner" that stands out.  I miss the south.
