Lutheran by Choice
« on: Tue Aug 02, 2011 - 09:55:07 »
Hello! I am a brand new member and also recently, a new member of the local Lutheran Church. I'm a mature man with a more independent, congregationalist type background. By nature I'm a constant learner, a seeker of sorts. So, why did I choose to become a Lutheran? I'll just give a few thoughts that meant much to me.

I value a salvation that is 100% based upon the person and merit of Jesus Christ, for I find it soundly biblical. I've always cherished Luther for bringing back to the front the teaching of justification by faith alone. I also am understanding better the distinction between law and gospel in a more productive manner in my life, thanks to the Lutheran approach, including how the gospel works in my sanctification as well as in justification. I like Luther's statement: "if grace is true, you must bear a true and not a fictitious sin. God does not save people who are only fictitious´╗┐´╗┐ sinners."  I have enough trouble with the true sins given us in the Scripture without worrying about the man-made sins. On a more subjective and personal note; I like going to church where people care enough to dress as well as they would going to a nice restaurant. I am enjoying the God honoring songs with majestic, quality music that lets me know I am in the presence of God. I'm learning the liturgical worship and its reverence that focuses us on the Triune God. Then I have always appreciated the freedom and liberty I find in Luther and as expressed in Romans 14; freedom for me and a freedom I give to others in Christ. My neighborhood church is of the ELCA, and my latest Study Bible is the one published by the LCMS so I hope to get a broad spectrum of Lutheran viewpoints. I look forward to learning more in the future.

I'm a "Lutheran by choice" as well, coming from a Catholic background.

I only occasionally post here, but perhaps more often in the future.

I am Lutheran by choice ( I suppose ). I've looked into other denominations, but Lutheranism fits best. But my family has been Lutheran since I was 5 years old, so it's not like I "found" Lutheranism after much searching...
