Something I have been telling people about us in an email I sent out is this:

Quote from: Big Mike Lewis
We're not the usual Church of Christ.  We are very involved in social justice, reaching the poor, the local Hispanic population and we don't tend to stick to the "norms" of Churches of Christ.  For example, the women of this congregation are very involved and participate publicly in the assembly (i.e. they speak, pray, read scripture, etc.) and we have several female deacons.

A few of our past ministers have been Tim Woodroof, John York, and Mark LaValley and each man has had tremendous influence on us as a family of God.

Our job as members is to try to contact as many people we can to get them to submit applications.  If you have a friend or know of anyone and would like to give them our church information or my name and email I would be happy to pursue a conversation with anyone interested in a new ministry position here in Oregon.

Of course you don't need to email me.  The email of our Minister Recruitment Team is in the previous post.

This is an opportunity of a lifetime.  Westside is not a church that is going to be bogged down in issues of the past that Churches of Christ tend to have dealt with.  We're on fire and ready to go.  We are hungry for a leader to step up and lead us forward.  We are very outreach minded.  We're surrounded by thousands of residences.  We've got a very large building with lots of room to grow.  This is something I would think many preachers are looking for in a congregation.

Could someone update this, please?  Is this position open or has someone been chosen?

Position is still open.

We've had in 3 candidates and will possibly have in one more so far. I have a feeling we will know who we will hire after the next unless someone really shows they are the one.

@nehemiah,
A Master's degree shows a willingness to learn more, humility in the knowledge you currently have, and a deeper understanding of His Word as you have dug deeper through study. You'll notice it is not required, so if you are qualified to lead a congregation, you'll show your ability through your CD you send in and/or resume of success in ministry. I don't have one. I believe I could lead my congregation without it. But, I think it is important to look at.

Big Mike,

   I continue to pray that you find the right family to work with your family there.

    Now that you're this close I would like to say that I know two of the past ministers you have had at your congregation (John and Tim). And no matter how tempting it would be to move to the west coast and work with you and a daily basis, just the thought that I was following those men in the pulpit would scare me away.  They are great communicators, and anything I felt that I could offer would be sub-par at best.

Oh, please. With degrees in religion, for the most part, comes arrogance and it always makes me think of this...

6they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.'

 8"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. 9And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ. 11The greatest among you will be your servant. 12For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

You should read my writing about the woman in the pew on the artists thread. it is a story about a real minister as opposed to this.

ooooookay....

I think we have found our man. He's 29 with a Master's degree. But, that's not why we're probably going with him.

If we choose him, it's because he has a heart for ministry, he's excited about the possibilities, he's well versed in the scriptures, he wants to reach the lost, he's someone you would want to get to know even if you hated God, and he can preach the Word in really cool ways. I don't know if he would have some of these things had he not continued his education...he might, but we'll never know.

@Weeble, thanks for your prayers.

This isn't a discussion on whether folks with Master's degrees are full of themselves or whether those who complain about folks with Master's degrees are full of themselves.

If you want to start a thread about this is another area of the forum, feel free.  However, this thread was about an opening in a particular congregation for a minister.

So, did you guys choose this guy, or someone else? Or, is the position still available?

He was selected. His first Sunday was this past Sunday.

Aaron Metcalf is our new minister. He's an ACU grad for both B.A. and his Master's work. He was working in Longview, WA when he applied and before we hired him. He is originally from the Gresham, Oregon area...so he's somewhat a local resident.

He is going to work out great for us. He's already gotten some people more motivated than they were before.

By God's grace, i got converted in Otober 17, 1987 (one saturday evening, around 5 pm), after being preached to, i realised my self as a sinner. I confessed my sins and forsake them, and since then, the Lord has been helping me in the faith. I faced a lot of chalenges in life, yet , i maintain my commitment and consecration i made with the Lord.
I am a Born again pastor, married with three children, a university graduate, a forty four years old.
I am ready  to relocate and serve God anywhere if the oportunity is given to me. And if you require any additional information about me, i will be glad to respond immediately.
