I like that.  If I were some sort of mental health professional, I'd be a behavioral psychologist before I'd be either a psychiatrist or a psychoanalist.

It's lovely to figure out what happened to us to 'make us that way'; but NOW, what are we gonna do about functioning healthily in spirit, in society, in the family, in the church?  Hmmm?

From the terrible movie 1941 when the two shore watchers get caught in the Ferris Wheel while looking for Japanese invaders.

"Trapped.... like beavers"

Same movie when John Belushi wants to steal a person's motorcycle.

"Look! A baby wolf!" (We used that for years on our kids and they were each probably 5 or 6 before they quit looking  ;)

The most popular line in our house (at least for my wife and me) is when the kids or one of us starts ranting about everything that is going wrong. Someone will add.

"OUR PET'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!!"

I have a victory to report! Our Sunday school class is studying 1 Corinthians and today we got to Chapter 11. I've been worrying myself (and my husband) sick, trying to figure out how I'd even go, whether I'd get kicked out or just be rude to my classmates (Can't call them Brothers and Sisters in the mood I was in). But, I went, God helped me be polite, and I can - and want to - look my Brothers and Sisters in the eyes. (No one told my why it could matter to the angels, though.)

Wow, a really old post.  But still timely.

My absolute favorite line ever from a movie was by Richard Harris in the title role of “Cromwell” done in 1970.  It’s a prayer that I utter frequently.  Cromwell was suited up in armor on horseback, about to engage in civil war, battling against King Charles’ side. 

“Lord, thou knowest how busy I must be this day.  If I forget thee, do not thou forget me.”

Amen to that.

Another very timely quote from Cromwell illustrates just how bold one must be when grappling with an enemy that insists that we “play nice” when confronting them.  A VERY appropriate message for us today in this super-sensitive, easily-offended culture.

Cromwell was seated at a table with a group of Parliament’s representatives and King Charles, who were trying to delicately address King Charles’ favoritism of Catholic influence in the country, due to his having a Catholic wife, Queen Henrietta.   

After King Charles gave a lame excuse for his reluctance to deal with the Catholic problem, Cromwell stared at the king and asked, “Are you sure, your majesty, that this is not a matter of...domestic expediency?” 

“You are...IMPERTINENT, sir”, the king responded in a huff.  The other Parliament members also gave shocked protests at Cromwell’s blunt accusations of the king hiding behind his wife’s skirts in political matters.

“SUCH THINGS ARE BEYOND GOOD MANNERS”, Cromwell stubbornly insisted.

And so it is today.  Such things as moral deviance in this country are also “beyond good manners” for discussing in a polite fashion.  It’s impossible to speak of things abominable to God without ruffling the feathers of those offended by us.

We don’t need “more cowbell”.
We need more Cromwell.
