Thanks for the info, JAIA. I didn't know about this one, either...

(I did see that there is a movie called "The Nativity" coming out around Christmas time... I'll be interested in seeing that if I am able...)

One Night With The King Opens Tonight Nationwide

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the world’s largest religious network and America’s most-watched faith channel, announced that One Night With The King, the highly anticipated motion picture TBN is producing in partnership with Gener8Xion Entertainment, will open in theaters nationwide tonight!

Based on the best-selling novel Hadassah: One Night With The King by Tommy Tenney and Mark Andrew Olsen, this dramatic big-screen adaptation chronicles a young woman’s rise from peasant to princess, her courageous role in the redemption of her people from destruction and death, and her winning of the love of the most powerful man in the kingdom -- by seeking his heart rather than the riches of his kingdom.

Paul Crouch, Jr., TBN’s Vice President of Administration, said that following its run in more than 950+ theaters in select cities across America, One Night With The King will make its television debut on TBN worldwide on March 14th 2007, the date which coincides with the Jewish holiday of Purim. “Purim is one of the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar,” said Crouch. “It is based on the book of Esther and commemorates that historical time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination. One Night With The King brings to life the story of Esther’s courage and faith on behalf of God’s people.”

One Night With The King stars two of Hollywood’s most legendary living icons, Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif, along with the renowned John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings trilogy), Luke Goss (Blade II, ZigZag), John Noble (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (Next Friday), James Callis (Bridget Jones Diary, Battlestar Galactica), Jonah Lotan (24, The Jacket) and Hollywood newcomer Tiffany Dupont.

“One Night With The King is a story of divine destiny,” said the film’s producer Matthew Crouch, chairman and CEO of Gener8Xion Entertainment. “Hadassah was a poor, unknown peasant girl, an orphan, an outcast from a distant land, who went on to become queen of a powerful empire. Her poignant story proves that anyone, no matter their circumstances, can rise to greatness when guided by the hand of destiny.”

Shot entirely on location in Rajasthan – India ‘s very own land of the kings – One Night With The King exudes exotic splendor. “The lush color and vigorous landscape seen throughout the movie can only be captured in a classic old-world setting, ripe with millennia of history,” noted Crouch. “One Night With The King is rich with mystical allure, suspense, intrigue, and political intrigue within unparalleled drama. It’s an unforgettable love story set in a world of adventure and it appeals to people of all faiths.”

Paul Crouch Jr. noted that TBN is the undisputed leader in producing and airing quality inspirational programming, including the best in faith-based and family-friendly movies. “That is why TBN has partnered to produce this moving and powerful motion picture based on one of the Old Testament’s most beloved characters,” he said.

Went to see this film with my wife.  She liked it based on the love story.  For the most part, when it did stay with scripture it was good.  It did try to squeeze time periods such as six weeks to the destruction of the Jews rather than almost a year.  The historical background of the Persian/Greek war is debateable as to whether it happend after Esther or before chapter two.  The use of a Nazi symbol and the contrast of democracy vs. Persia seemed more like the 20th Century instead of ancient Persia.  I thought the city structure was over done but did enjoy the cultural aspects of the streets and inner palace.

It did ask a number of questions.  How did Mordecai communicate with Esther?  What was Haman's problem with the Jews?  Was there political problems in Persia?  Was Xerxes weak or was the giving of a ring to a trusted official normal procedure?  What was the background of Haman?  These are others were raised as I watched the movie.

I think that it would have been a better movie, though I enjoyed it, if as one critic said, it tightened the script to scripture and if more familiar Biblical scholars, historians and archaeologists were consulted.

It will not be a classic like"The Ten Commandments" and "The Passion of the Christ"  nor does it match the culture and Biblical examples of "Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Gospel of John," but it is something one can watch and enjoy.

I'd never read this review because I'd never heard of the movie, and from the title thought it was about Elvis...seriously.  Then a brother from church mentioned wanting to see and told me about, so I thought I'd come read the post.  Elvis...well it does start with an E. Doh!

You can tell that brother from church that you are on a message board with Elvis Presley.  Elvis Presley salutes you....

I work with an Alvis and my preacher's a Presley.  And I bought the movie "Bubba Ho-tep" for my mother, who is an Elvis nut, recently.  That's as Elvis as it gets around here.

I will likely buy this Esther movie.

One Night With The King quietly came out a couple of weeks ago.  It is a love story based on a novel called "Hadassah" about Esther and Xerxes.  Esther is played by a newcomer Tiffany Dupont and actors John Rhys-Davis who played Mordecai (also the Egyptian in the Indiana Jones movies and Gimli in Lord of the Rings), John Noble (also of Lord of the Rings), and Omar Sharif.  Peter O'toole made a brief appearance as Samuel.

When King Saul did not kill all the Amalekites, what happened to them.  A number of scholars think that Haman, the bad guy of Esther, was an Amalekite.

This is a film done by a Christian company, filmed in India.  I thought that the cultural aspects were captured well, though the overview of Suza was overdone.  In one scene, we see rows of scribes writing down Xerxes words.  When one remember that Persia had 127 Provinces, that made sense.

Much of story centered around the upcoming invasion of Greece.  Unfortunately, I think this also distracted the story.  some think that Xerxes had already invaded Greece and lost by the time Esther comes on the scene.  Pushing this time frame of preparation into the film forced some errors into it.  One centered around the meal(s) Esther served to Haman and the King.  The book of Esther states there was two, but the film shows one.  We also see Haman as not pleading for his life but threatening Esther with death before being arrested.

Overall, it was an enjoyable movie, but not a Biblical epic.  When it comes out on video, it would be worth having despite some of ideas.  Some Christian themes created in to the film.  The Jews prayed to God as "Father," which I doubt they did in those days.  Haman was portrayed as a evil man in the line of the Nazis, even wearing a symbol of that.  And the Star of David played a role in a piece of jewelry as well.  Having said that, it did capture some of the Biblical ideas found in Esther.

When the credits rolled by, I did not notice any well know theologians, archaeologists or historians mentioned.  As some have suggested, with a better script, it could have been a much better film.  Had the screen writer(s) started with Esther and then worked with that material and historical background, it could have been a more successful and important film.

The screen writer for "The Rookie" and "Radio" has done the screen writing for the upcoming film, "The Nativity" said that when one does a story like The Rookie, most people do not know them so one can embellish for dramatic effect.  But when one does such a well known story as The Nativity (or in this case Esther), a screen writer really needs to be careful.

A teacher could use this film as a means of showing good and bad interpretations of events that we have little information.  I used another made for TV movie, "In The Beginning" in a teen class, showing the good and positive ideas of interpretation as well as where they went off.  Two other movies that are worthy are 'Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Gospel of John."

We need good Biblical movies and some have been made.  It is always a challenge because so many known scripture.

Thanks George! I wish to publish movie reviews on the magazine part of this site (as well as in these forums )that are well thought out and well written. So if you want to be a movie critic/reviewer -- have at it!
