Barack Obama was awarded today with the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, for 'extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.'

I find the award somewhat surprising, though I think it will be well-deserved, if the atmosphere he has generated is any indication. He has shown, particularly in his Cairo speech in June 2009, an emphasis upon peace and unity, particularly in areas that, through the Bush administration, became alienated (such as the Muslim community). That an international committee has honored our President in this way is inspiring. It's no secret that America's reputation has been somewhat slighted by unfortunate comments and actions under the previous Presidential terms. Hopefully this marks a new trust of America that will lead to a level of world peace.

There's another way of looking at it.

They didn't like George W. Bush and his conservative views.

So they gave the Nobel Prize to the man he beat in 2000.

They still don't like George W. Bush and conservatives.

So they give it to George W. Bush's replacement after less than 8 months in office.

Norwegian liberals are no friends of Christians.

Can you explain your last sentence?  It seems a bit of a non sequitur (sorry Jaime.)

btw, why does everyone take this award so seriously?  Past winners include a terrorist (Arafat) and a man who masterminded the killing and overthrow of a Democratically elected ruler (Kissinger).

You can look at it that way if you like. I personally think that's a bit paranoid.

Don't forget Kissinger's co-winner, Le Duc Tho.

[At least the latter had the dignity to decline the "honor."]

Is there anyone who thinks that this won't affect Obama's decision whether  to beef up our forces in Afghanistan?

I'm not entirely sure what this means. How many Norwegian liberals do you know? Why are they not friends of Christians? Do you mean your particular breed of Christianity (that is, conservative)?

obama was actually nominated back in november 2008 (before he had done anything except talk) and voted as the recipient back in febrary 2009, about 2 weeks into his presidency (before he had done anything except talk).   What has he done since then (except talk) that would clearly add support to all this?  He has officially accepted the award so he doesn't believe that he is undeserving (regardless of what he might say or otherwise he would have rejected the award)

Source please? The process of nomination and selection is terribly secretive in the Nobel Prizes, so I'd be interested in hearing where you got those dates.

Hummm...  Could be.

http://nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/process.html  seems to confirm it

The deadline for submissions was February 1st... 12 days after his swearing in.

Ah, but that's different than what you claimed. You claimed that he was nominated in November 2008, and was voted the victor in February. That website confirms what I thought was the case: that submissions for nominations ended in February, and that the actual determining process continued over the following months.

It wasn't me that claimed anything.. but I do find it rediculous that someone submitted his name by February 1st... he hadn't done anything by that point.
