Our school system's closed for faculty senate, not Columbus Day.  The neighboring county's open.

I think this type of holiday should be used for education, but then again, if I were to design the school system, it would look very, very different.

Hi K-pappy, I'm not sure about that, members and visitors must be out celebrating Columbus Day, or fighting with the Indians picketing the parades; it's sure quiet here today.

In Jesus' name.

columbus day is a disgrace to America.  I will never celebrate it or observe it in any way.  America wasn't
even lost it did not need discovering.   I would celebrate a Chief Joseph day or a George washinton Carver day.

I agree.  The RCC had a bishoprick in "the New World" before Columbus "discovered" it.

Suddenly an Italian carries away a king's ransom in gold and the Spanish monarchy gets new maps.  Why doesn't this seem so heroic to me?

I don't know about the rest of you, but prior to retirement, I welcomed any day off as something to celebrate. I just never remember celebrating Columbus or even thanking him for a three day weekend.   Smile

In Jesus' name.

Bartolome didn't torture and kill; he wrote exposing and criticizing those who did.

An excellent little book, btw, well worth reading.

Just a few points: Columbus had to be recalled to Europe when he was governor of Hispaniola because he was being a genocidal maniac. He died thinking he had reached India. He certainly didn't prove the earth was round as folk stories say--scholars had known that the earth was round for many centuries.
