Feds Seize Religious Tracts
June 7, 2006 10:45 a.m. EST

Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Contributor
Denton, TX (AHN) - The U.S. Secret Service confiscated an evangelical ministry's religious tracts because they were printed on what looked like $1 million dollar bills, saying the handbills too closely resemble real money.

After someone brought one of the tracts to a bank on the East Coast, alerted authorities traced the bill to Denton. They arrived at the headquarters of the Great News Network on Friday and took 8,300 of tracts, the AP reports.

Daniel Rundus, the ministry's founder, says he doesn't understand how he can be accused of counterfeiting a bill that does not exist - the highest denomination of U.S. currency is the $100,000 bill.

They are "gospel tracts," Rundus says. "You think the Secret Service would have more to do than raid a Christian ministry."

I've seen one of those.  For them to be confused with money, one would have to be pretty dense.

It sometimes seems that some "authorities" have their senses of humor and proportion surgically removed.

I have given out probably hundreds of these tracts over the last couple of years, and have had quite a few people say, "is this real?"... They are wonderful tracts, and even more than that, they are wonderful ice breakers. It is a shame that the Feds decided to do what they did. If you have the time, Google "million dollar bill" or "billion dollar bill". Then ask yourself why would the Feds would go after these million dollar bills, as opposed to all of the others.

Hubby is a rare coin and currency dealer.  He has suppliers who sell "million dollar bills" without even a tract printed on them.  He's had them in his store before.

It seems to me that the feds should be concentrating on real counterfeits, like the Trade Dollars that are being made in China for export.

Actually, the whole story sounds a bit bogus.  I wonder if it's a stretcher.

Actually, it's not. This was reported from directly from Living Waters ministry right after it happened, and then hit several news oulets shortly thereafter.

"On June 1, 2006, the United States Secret Service seized 8,300 copies of Comfort's "million-dollar bill" tract from the headquarters of The Great News Network, a sister ministry to Living Waters. The USSS did so because, they claim, a woman in North Carolina attempted to deposit the tracts as legal tender. The Secret Service also stated that they would seize all copies in stock at Living Waters' California headquarters. [2] Comfort has stated that he will refuse to turn over the tracts without a warrant, which was not given during the raid on GNN. [3] In a news interview, GNN founder and president Darrel Rundus stated that he will continue passing out the bills, stating that "until I hear different, I don't believe what the Secret Service did yesterday was lawful," and is expecting a "cease and desist" order from the USSS Monday, with possible legal action to follow. [4] In an official statement on the GNN Web site, he stated that "the USSS was overzealous in their seizure of our property and they violated our constitutional rights by depriving us of property without due process. Without a court order, warrant or any legal precedent, they barged into our office, disrupted our daily activities and illegally seized our property." Rundus further suggested that the message on the "money" was the reason why they were seized."
