James Dobson Leaving Focus on the Family

James Dobson, the voice of conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, will no longer host its flagship radio broadcast and is cutting formal ties with the organization that he founded more than 30 years ago, the evangelical group said Friday.

Dobson, 73, and the board of directors both agreed about the moves, which will go into effect at the end of February, ministry officials said. The decision to part ways was amicable and long anticipated, said Gary Schneeberger, spokesman for the Colorado Springs-based group.

Dobson has distanced himself in recent years from the organization he founded in 1977 and built into an influential force — both as a political powerhouse and provider of conservative family and moral advice. Dobson resigned as Focus on the Family president in 2003 and as chairman of the board in February.

Dobson did not issue a statement on his departure. Dobson's "health and attitude are great," Schneeberger said. Daly, added that Dobson "will continue to make his voice heard in the public square. Dr. Dobson is a wordsmith, but one word I don't suspect we'll hear him using is 'retirement,'" he said.

In announcing his resignation as chairman of the board earlier this year, Dobson said: "One of the common errors of founder-presidents is to hold to the reins of leadership too long, thereby preventing the next generation from being prepared for executive authority ... Though letting go is difficult after three decades of intensive labor, it is the wise thing to do." Source

It did not say. They might have agreed not to make that public.

Dobsons views have become ever more aligned with the Republican Party and Focus on the Family has been close to losing tax exempt status.  Not sure if that is the main reason but I know that has been an issue.

Oh I see, that's probably it. It can't be a tax exempt "ministry" if he is advocating that people vote certain ways and if he is advancing a particular political agenda.

Dobson had a stroke quite a few years ago.

Granted at that time they had a new "miracle fix" which did aleviate many of the destructive effects that a stroke can inflict...but since that time where there was only a dabbling into politics from time to time Dobson himself has focused more and more into the realm of politics.

Also at that time (of suffering the stroke) he began to let go of some of the reigns of leadership at Focus on the Family and was very self concious as far as personally getting involved with family advice any longer. He was scared that his brains weren't the same as they used to be and didn't want that to ever afflict anyone with bad advice.

It did begin as a family support ministry in helping Christians with advice on how to raise children and get along in this world. He was a leader in pioneering Christian counciling as well. He promoted many teaching tools in biblical hermeneutics and bible lessons...

Tax issues and the rest of it were only icing on the cake. No political party in charge will allow an adversary to get away with "tax exempt" status...but a friendly one will be "overlooked".

Maybe they can get a speaker that's actually interesting, or makes sense, now.

It is one of those things....kinda like the Billy Graham crusades. ONce the man is gone...the man is gone. And the man has been gone for a long time now. He hasn't been making decisions for a long time and was kept primarily as a face man. I would dare say that he isn't going to be much longer here on this earth.

Maybe there will be someone new to come along...but so much is simply disapearing of late.

I wonder if God will send us some new Christian Leaders.  Right now all I have seen is a bunch of "profits" of God and none of his spokesman.
