I recently read a story in the local newspaper about a woman who went to India to have major surgery.  She would have had to spend her life savings in the U.S. if she'd had it done here.    In India, the cost was approx. a tenth of U.S. hospitalization costs.   She had two private nurses and was treated royally, and recovered well.  Many of the doctors in other countries were trained in the U.S., and were as skilled as U.S. surgeons.  The woman did plenty of research before reaching a final decision on where she would have the surgery and said she would do it again if the need arose.   In bed

More and more people seem to be opting to leave the U.S. to head for other countries to have surgical procedures and treatments.  Would you consider having surgery in another country?  Or would you take your chances in the U.S., knowing that the costs are much higher, and patient care not as good?

On a side note, I do believe the government is trying to discourage people from leaving the country to have surgeries.  Since I read that woman's story, I've noticed that on Fox online news, almost every day there is a negative story about hospitals in the U.K. and elsewhere outside the U.S..  Do you think it could be an attempt by the media to discredit foreign hospitals and doctors?  I wouldn't put anything past the government at this point.

I don't get Fox News, but I would imagine that they would be attacking the quantity of health care, rather than the quality...  You can get adequate health care if you survive the waiting.

On the other hand, India and some other "third world" nations, seem to welcome foreign medical tourism to help pay for their national health care system, as well as boost their service economy in general.

I have seen similar positive reports on, I believe, Sixty Minutes, and would consider such care in a heartbeat, after doing sufficient research as to their success rate. I agree

I would do it in a heartbeat as long as the whole thing is well researched.  Why not save money if possible?

It would depend on the country, but if I could save a lot on the surgery, then, yes, I would go outside this country for the surgery. Of course, I don't know how I would get there and back since I have no money for travel. Right now I owe probably close to $15,000 in medical bills, and that is after my health insurance paid what they considered their share. I can barely afford to eat due to paying so many medical bills. I can't afford any fun time that costs money. I can't afford to eat out once in a while as I'd like to do or do anything that takes money, because of trying to pay these medical bills.

What I am surprised at is that Medical Insurance companies don't cover these types of services; possible collusion with, and/or kickbacks from the American Medical Association?
