It is the hillbillies that just do not have common sense.

Red necks have a certain amount of je ne sais quoi. A desirable trait ::nodding::

What most people call a redneck
Ain't nothin' but a workin' man
And he makes his livin'
By the sweat of his brow
And the calluses on his hands
Now you intellectuals may not like it
But there ain't nothin' that you can do
'Cause there's a whole lot more of us common-folks
Then there ever will be of you

This is a hillbilly, not a redneck.

I know this because I am a hillbilly (but not a redneck).

Jorts (Jean shorts) ARE acceptable to Red Necks, especially with cowboy boots.

I remember when I was in High School, my dad had me and my friend hoeing cotton one hot summer day. The cotton was about shin-high, and we were getting hot, so we stripped down to our tidy whiteys, cowboy hats and boots. Didn't think anyone would see us out in the middle of the country. Until we saw my dad's car coming down the turn row of the field and we noticed he had my grandmother with him. I'm sure she was appalled as we high tailed it down to the other end of the field! I'm sure my dad told my grandmother, Them boys don't have a lick of sense!

Well you talk with a degree of education and a whole lot of common sense.

Those that I am referencing do neither

In the north they prefer flip flops for winter shoes, or bare feet in the snow.

Don't you live in too much of a city area for rednecks?

Yep

"Pennsyltucky." The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area is in red, the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area is in blue, and the "Pennsyltucky counties" are white.

But aren't you from the burbs?

Technically.

I am in a different county (Washington)  altogether from the city. About 15 miles south of the city. But in the red area of the map... those most of it votes blue.... and about 45 min from the Norther part of W VA panhandle and also Ohio.

My township is the only one outside of Allegheny county that actually is included in the Greater Pittsburgh phone book.

Rella,

Have you spent any real time with any hillbillies or rednecks?

What would be the difference between a hillbilly and a redneck to you?

What was this thread supposed to be about?  Crapping on rural people?

This wasn't addressed to me, but I'm going to answer anyway.

To be a proper Hillbilly, your family must come from someplace rural, preferably in a mountainous region, and have a good dose of Scottish or Irish blood.  Your forbearers probably wore grey during the Civil war, and they definitely were home-schooled.  You should be able to count at least 3 close relatives who are literally named William.

(If that sounds like you, but your zip code is north of the Mason-Dixon line, you are probably a Billy-Bob instead).

William Jarrod (who goes by his middle name because there are so many other Williams, Bills, and Billies in his family that it would otherwise be confusing)

"Pennsyltucky."
Never heard of it.  I thought only Indiana Hoosiers were the ones trying to get out and into the neighboring states with "Michiana," "Ohiana," "Kentuckyana," and "Illiana."

I grew up in the area called Michiana.  The South Bend Tribune had a whole section of the paper named that all 7 days.

I grew up in very rural areas and have been around real hillbillies and rednecks.  And all in the northern most of the states not counting Alaska.  The around 2 people per square mile places.

from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsyltucky

Pennsyltucky is a slang portmanteau of the state names Pennsylvania and Kentucky. It is used to characterize—usually humorously, but sometimes deprecatingly—the rural part of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania outside the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metropolitan areas, more specifically applied to the local people and culture of its mountainous central Appalachian region. The term is used more generally to refer to the Appalachian region, particularly its central core, which runs from Pennsylvania to Kentucky, and its people.

The word implies a similarity between the two states' mostly rural sections, a connection that exists in fact after numbers of Western Pennsylvanians left the state for Kentucky after the Whiskey Rebellion. It can be used in either a pejorative or an affectionate sense.

Pennsyltucky is interchangeable with the slang term The T, used primarily in political circles (e.g., "Winning the T"), because of the shape of the area of Pennsylvania when excluding the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Metro areas. "The T" is considered a more politically correct term than "Pennsyltucky" when referring to potential voters without so openly insulting them.

The term Pennsyltucky can be traced back over a century.[5] Many of the earlier uses appear to be humorous references to a fictitious state. For example, Pennsyltucky is the name of the ship in the 1942 Popeye cartoon "Baby Wants a Bottleship".[6] By the 1970s, the term clearly referred to rural Pennsylvania, as evidenced by country music star Jeannie Seely's 1972 single "A Farm in Pennsyltucky" about her childhood home in northwestern Pennsylvania.[7] Also in 1972, Richard Elman writes in his semi-autobiographical Fredi & Shirl & The Kids that the character Fredi refers to all of Appalachia as Pennsyltucky.[8]

The modern popularization of the term is commonly associated with Democratic political consultant James Carville, who worked on President Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign.[9][10] Carville's original statement did not speak of "Pennsyltucky," instead comparing it to another rural Southern state, Alabama. In 1986, while working on Robert Casey, Sr.'s successful gubernatorial campaign, he said:

"Between Paoli and Penn Hills, Pennsylvania is Alabama without the blacks. They didn't film The Deer Hunter there for nothing" – the state has the second-highest concentration of NRA members, behind Texas.[11]
::tippinghat::

This quote is often paraphrased as "Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, and Alabama in the middle", or alternatively, "Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh separated by Alabama"
