Suffering for your beliefs is called faithfulness, making others suffer for your beliefs is called being a jerk.

His cross, like the ark in the wilderness, is the center around which his people are to encamp; so that they cannot separate into factions, or withdraw from each other, without retiring at the same time from the presence of the cross.

I asked my pastor this morning of his opinion on TS.  I have been all over the map on this one, so I really wanted to hear his view.
He emphatically stated that it was murder.  His reason was that she was not on life support, but rather that she simply could not feed herself.  Her heart beat of its own volition and no "machines" were hooked to her.
The more I thought about it, the more I agreed.  After all, it occurred to me, we could use the same definition to kill infants, could't we?
Can't feed themselves, minimal visible brain function?

Suppose there were a physician who had such skill that people would not die, or even though they died would afterward live forever. Just think how the world would snow and rain money upon him! Because of the pressing crowd of rich men no one else could get near him. Now, here in Baptism there is brought free to every man's door just such a priceless medicine which swallows up death and saves the lives of all men.

Except that infants have the tendency to grow out of this state of utter dependency at some point.

The same reason I would  argue to maintain a feeding tube in someone who has had a stroke and cannot swallow for at least a few months --- they may recover.

Ok, then what about an infant that will be developmentally handicapped?

Pull the feeding tube Mike?

After all they won't be just like us someday either, right?

That is why I believe this was a very sticky situation, in the name of "mercy"?

For whom?

IMHO our injustice system really dropped the ball on this one.  The men (and women) in black robes killed Terri Schiavo.

memmy,

I understand the emotional impact of this discussion, and I am not trying to be caustic. I also think that all of us commenting here are good, compassionate, caring people. We just have different opinions about what is involved in being a caring person and doing what is right in these extreme (but very common) circumstances.

I appreciate you and others on this board who care about the weak and disadvantaged. That is noble.

I only advocate withdrawal of artificial high tech life support (including feeding tubes) in cases of severe irreversible brain dysfunction.

on the basis of mercy and compassion, on the basis of upholding the dignity of human life, and on the understanding that life is not limited to just the time we are here on earth.  :)

Mike,
Could you define what you mean by irreversible brain dysfunction?
Thanks
