Never knew you could ship a gun and ammunition in your luggage. Doubt any of today's victims knew that either.

How did you think hunters who travel to distant regions to hunt get there?

Honestly, something I'd never even thought about. Would suppose weapons would be shipped and picked up separately through some screening process. The biggest surprise (to me) is this has not happened before, or even many times before. Talk about opportunity and a soft target. Anyone hell bent on a mass killing simply has to unzip their bag, throw a clip into their gun, and start shooting in a crowded baggage claim area. How convenient. With something like a little Scorpion EVO and oversized clips, you could take out scores of people in a matter of seconds. Scary.

He [the shooter] could have done all of that in Alaska where he boarded the plane without ever needing to check the weapon through baggage.  But anyone bent on a mass killing could simply toss a Molotov cocktail or two into a crowded area.  A man with a knife can take out several as was done in London.  A man driving a truck into a crowd as has been done in France and Turkey is an effective weapon of mass slaughter. The issue really has nothing to do with the weapons available; there are all manner of weapons that are readily available that can take out people.  The issue is the person wielding the weapon.  There is really no formal answer to protect against that.  The only real answer is the threat of punishment and that doesn't seem to work for most people such as the ones committing these atrocities.  A quick counter response is the only thing that seems to mitigate the overall carnage.

Absolutely agree.  Rental car, makeshift weapon from a restaurant or store, stolen motorized cart, stolen weapon from TSA, plenty of opportunity at an airport.

Nice legs! Who's the guy with you, and did someone glue your fingers to your chin?  rofl
My first airplane ride was in 1977, from Dallas to Amarillo, but I was a good Christian girl and kept my legs covered!  ::giggle:: I was seated next to a man who chain smoked and wanted to show me all the pictures in his wallet. I was barely 18 years old. Feels like a lifetime ago - guess it was.

Some of you must not have flown much.  I would especially think that someone who lives near Boise with a relatively small airport would have seen guns in baggage claim.  I have, and in Boise.

I'm one of those annoying flyers who does carry-on, so I'm never in the baggage claim area.
My daughter has talked me into checking my baggage on my next flight, so I'll try to remember to make note if I see any guns in baggage claim.

I seldom fly. Like maybe twice in the past ten years.

And a rarity for me to be in baggage claim even when I flew often. Like Mommy, strictly carry on.

My sympathies. Traveling from Dallas to Amarillo, and a chain smoker, too? That seems equivalent to time at Gitmo!  ::noworries::

Hey, now! That hour long flight seemed like an eternity with camel unfiltereds funneling up my nasal passages the whole time!

I was pregnant, too, so that didn't help.  ::sick::

Most of the airlines are now charging equally for carry ons as well as checked baggage. Some of the massive airports like Toronto makes it a real pain to get your checked bags but we could never fit all of our gear into a carry on so we impatiently wait. We fly at least 3-4 times/year.
