Anyone running for the hills yet? I guess their mass producing vaccines now for it. I'll pass on the vaccine & panicking myself.

It's not "swine flu" - it's H1N1.

And turns out, it's no more dangerous or deadly than each season's normal flu and for the same groups - the elderly, very young, and those with compromised immune systems.

Simple things like coughing or sneezing into a sleeve, or disposable tissue, and regular handwashing, are the best way to avoid it and/or keep from spreading it.

It's not a big deal.

       It's too late for me to have any vaccine because I have had the flue for over two weeks now.  I don't know what kind of animal it came from.  I don't think it was a swine, perhaps a crocodile.

I had the Equine Flu last month.  I know that's what it was because the primary symptom is being hoarse.

I and my wife have had the flu now for over two weeks now, and I'm beginning to think we might survive. I cannot remember having lung congestion, and coughing as bad as this one produced in us, though it was not too bad with fever. Next year, I'm sure if they even suggest that there is a vaccine that might be effective on one in a hundred,  I might give it a try, as I'm stupid and don't really believe the scare tactics of warnings saying I could lose my liver, a kidney, or suffer leprosy's decay.   Frowning

I work in healthcare, and am sure they will be pushing the vaccines, but I still pass just like I do every year.  Had the swine flu vaccine back in 1976 when I was in the army.  Made me really really sick

larry2 - In 1976 God's plan must have been to kill more that took the vaccinations than that suffered through the flu. I may be wrong as I didn't read everything about it, but there was 19 that died of the flu without shots, while 500 people who received the shot developed a paralyzing nerve disease and more than 30 of them died.

In retrospect, some critics now say 40 million Americans were vaccinated for nothing.

In an article about flu pandemics and non-pandemics for The New York Times Magazine in 1992, Robin Marantz Henig recalled:

Influenza experts thought they saw big-league trouble coming in February 1976, when a few cases of severe swine flu broke out among young military recruits in Fort Dix, N.J. One of them, Pvt. David Lewis, 19, died. Of 19 patients whose specimens were sent to the Centers for Disease Control for virus typing, Lewis and four others were shown to be infected with the same H1N1 influenza virus as was responsible for the 1918 pandemic. This got many public-health officials into gear, hoping to use modern technology, namely vaccination, to head off a disaster of the magnitude of 1918.

As Andrew Pollack reported in The New York Times a few years ago, the Ford administration's aggressive approach in 1976 may have wound up doing more harm than good:

That is the year President Gerald R. Ford announced a crash program to ”inoculate every man, woman and child in the United States” against swine flu. But the virus never became a killer, and vaccinations were halted two months after they began after reports that 500 people who received the shot developed a paralyzing nerve disease and more than 30 of them died.
