Revivals
« on: Sun Oct 28, 2012 - 10:29:25 »
I have wondered for many years now...

What's the purpose of those huge citywide revivals,  ::headscratch::  such as Billy Graham or Promise Keepers?

What can they do, that local churches can't do?    ::shrug::

These revival meetings are filling in the great gap of work that the local churches are NOT doing. If the local churches were effective, we wouldn't need individuals who are gifted in evangelization, or healing or the prophetic to come to minister to great numbers.

A good, Spirit-led church has members who are gifted in ALL areas (which comprises a whole Body of Christ), including evangelization, healing and the prophetic, to function well in the Body and in the community.

Then perhaps the solution should be to train the local church leaders...?

As they say, you can give a man a fish, or teach him how to fish. Otherwise, you might only be cultivating a cult of personality around the superstar preachers.

Surely we've all seen plenty of famous evangelists get caught up in sexual/financial scandals, and destroy the faith of many when they go down in flames. They enjoyed the spotlight too much, and were accountable to no one.

Yes, the job of the local church is to train us up to become spiritual leaders, to not only minister to the Body but to be effective in the community/world as fishers of men!

Then, those who are truly gifted in the areas of evangelism will not be overrun, nor become superstars, and thus always tempted with falling to the sins associated with fame. The gifted rise up to the challenge, rather than the ungifted, and uncalled, who seek the limelight and fail.
