I hear it after prayers.  What does it mean?  When I say it, I want to understand what it means, not just say it because it is something I should say.

it doesn't have to be said after prayers, it can be said before prayers also.  it is the authority, the power, punctuation, the period, it is the Name that means business... no other Name!!!!!!

It is also the name that you use to request anything from God.

Example; "My Lord and my God, in the name of your son Jesus Christ, I ask that you give me this that and the other, amen."

Or, the other way round:  "My Lord and my God, I ask that you give me this that and the other, in the name of your son Jesus Christ, amen."

Both versions means the same thing.  It is frequently said in prayers because most prayers are actually requests to God asking God for something.

A Jesus stated "... anything you ask My Father in heaven in my name and you believe it, it shall be granted to you.

All through history, royal servants have delivered messages "in the name of the king."

This means "by the authority of the king."

And you do not have to say it!.

If you act or pray or just stand there breathing "in the name of Jesus", that means you ARE in Him, you ACT and PRAY in His authority.  Already!  He did it, it's His power, you're allowed to wield it because you have been given it as His beloved.

It's not some kind of magic spell incantation, that you have to stick to your prayer like a postage stamp to make sure it goes to Heaven and not to the Other Place.

If you, as a Christian, offer prayer to God, you are doing it in Jesus' name -- in the authority you were given, by Jesus, to do it -- with the power of Jesus behind it.

When you do something in Jesus' name, you are drawing on His power -- because you have been given the authority to sign on His checking account of grace and mercy and love and limitless power.

So, if you are saved at all, you are saved in His name.

If you take pity and have mercy on anyone because it's what your Lord would have you to do, you are doing it in His name.

See what I mean?  One way to keep yourself from falling into some kind of empty-headed, automatic parroting of that phrase, when you pray aloud, is to not say it.  Instead, come up with another way to express the same ideas.

You will know that you have fallen into a crowd who has already been lost in the empty-headed parrot stage, if you have your turn to pray aloud for the group, and you express the same sentiments toward God but don;t say those exact words -- and someone approaches you to tell you it was wrong to not say the phrase.

Yes, and it's probably a bad idea to say something "in His name" that He wouldn't actually say, so don't abuse it.

Janine, there prayers and prayers, if yu know what I mean.

I bellieve if you are not particular about your prayer being answered, then you can take your chances and leave  out "in Jesus name".  But if you definitely want your prayers to be answered by God, then you have to do as  he commanded - ask it in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ.  No ifs or buts or maybes ...
