The national debt has now exceeded $16 TRILLION which is over $46,000 for every man, woman and child in the country. Does that concern you?
If it does, do you hope that our next president will do something to reduce it?

Anybody who has even the tiniest amount of "flag-waver" in his veins should be ashamed of this, and it should speak volumes about the country needing to think in humbler proportions.

I'm never going to forget how conservatives barely raised objections at Bush for his outrageous spending, his weird faith in the prosperous/wealthy (an ideology that STILL plagues the country from those days) and the belief that the country should assume that it's indestructible.

I heard something spot on lately on definitions:

Recession: when your neighbor loses his job.

Depression: when you lose yours.

Recovery: when Obama loses his.

There's only one presidential candidate right now who I could honestly believe would do his best to kick the spending habits of the last two presidents and I'm blown away that it doesn't mean squat to so many people. I honestly wonder how they are reasoning this out, that we can afford not to care about which president would actually make progress toward trimming the debt.

The debt needs to be brought down NOW. We need to IMMEDIATLY get at least a trillion (with a T) in annual SURPLUS to start paying this off.

I see NO ONE running today that has any kind of plan doing this.

If we can have an economy growing faster than the debt then the debt will become less and less of a problem.

Except we don't.

And we don'really NEED a "growing" economy. We need a steady state economy where people are employed and maintaining. If we grow, it is at someone else's expense and that is ultimately not sustainable.

We KNOW Obama's policies will ad to the national debt. I was wondering what you think of Ron Paul's plan to cut 5 programs and $1 TRILLION in his first year?

Yes, we need a growing economy. It is in the so-called "steady-state" economy that my kids will only benefit by the suffering of others.

No one's economy had to shrink for ours to get so big. The zero sum fallacy is that - a fallacy. The next time you go to the grocery store, work, out to eat, etc., ask yourself who won. The answer is both sides walk away feeling like a winner in the transaction or else they wouldn't have had the transaction. That is, unless you're dealing with someone with a gun to your head like a politician or some other criminally-minded type.

Y'all do know that the President (any President) has little to do with adding to/subtracting from the National Debt don't you?
Yes, they can request Congress to enact certain policies which might add to/subtract from, but the President does not have the power to do this on their own.

IT'S CONGRESS!

Which is WHY the most important part of the upcomming election is the Congressional side! To make a REAL difference, folks have to be assured that those elected to Congress will act to do the things needed to correct our failing economy, and all the other issues that face our Nation.

Do the anti-Obama folks just not understand? Certainly the National Media does, for they are relentless in ONLY stressing the Presidential side of the election, and trying to lessen the importance of the Congressional side. Is this a strategic move on their part? Why are the Republicans/Conservatives/whoevers not concentrating more on the Congressional elections?

This is where the battle will be won or lost...................regardless of which side one comes down on!

Even here, there is little to NO discussion of Congressional candidates, but a plethera of posts concerning the Presidential race. It's almost an incessent commenting of "beat Obama." Beating Obama is not nearly as important as winning control of both Houses for those who wish to beat Obama. Keeping Obama only serves those who favor Obama if they win back control of both Houses.

Do folks just not understand?

Common sense no longer prevails my friend. Even if we got someone in office that would try to reduce our debt, and bring back the constitution as our standard, do you really think all the rest of the politicians in the other two branches of our government that have been supporting just the opposite for so long, will just turn around and cooperate with someone trying to go in the opposite direction? Wow, that was a long sentence.

Obviously, all three branches of our government have been compromised with enemies of the Constitution, and those with no fiscal responsibility in mind at all. A perfect recipe for overthrowing the once most powerful nation on earth from within. We have been had.

So how is constant growth sustainable? The earth is only so big and only can adequately support a certain population.

One of the Repub guys recently said he could IMMEDIATLY cut spending by $1 trillion. (never said over how long) and that was $1 trillion MORE that people could spend.

How about using that 1 trillion to REDUCE the debt level instead?

another load of manuer, no President can reduce the budget........only Congress has that power...........why don't people understand this?

The ONLY way the President can reduce Government spending is by reducing the number of employees in his Administration.
