That's actually a little bit of a misquote. The actual quote says this:

"if we can but prevent the government from wasting the labours of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them, they must become happy." - Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Cooper, 29 November 1802 [source]

Nonetheless a good saying.

While we're at it here is a list of 10 Jefferson misquotes used in a right-wing chain email that has floated about.

That blogger needs to do more research instead of just using Google.  You realize most of those were, in fact, said by Thomas Jefferson, but the wording was not exact.

Though the wording may be slightly different, due to repeated requotes, the message is the same.

Nice try though!

Notice how it was said to be a right-wing chain e-mail?  Are there any liberty-minded folk out there who actually recall receiving such an e-mail?  I didn't.

How many folks know that Thomas Jefferson, amongst many others, went to church in the capital building?

They turned me loose from the nervous hospital.  Said I was well.  Mmm hmm.

Suffering for your beliefs is called faithfulness, making others suffer for your beliefs is called being a jerk.

His cross, like the ark in the wilderness, is the center around which his people are to encamp; so that they cannot separate into factions, or withdraw from each other, without retiring at the same time from the presence of the cross.

Ah yes, a "conservative" who works hard and wants the government off his back and to stop allowing unborn babies to be killed....if he posts something he must have gotten it from an "email chain letter." Yes, those "tolerant" liberals. They're just political hacks masquerading as open-minded and objective people.

But as was said, the quote has the same message even if you flip the end to the front. But liberals love to muddy the water whenever they can.

Yep.  That was a really poor attempt at slamming us right wing liberty lovers.

That blogger needs to do more research instead of just using Google.  You realize most of those were, in fact, said by Thomas Jefferson, but the wording was not exact.

The blogger used the Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia which is the central hub of Monticello researchers and scholars and the main place online to find original documents from Jefferson.

Its very common for both conservative and liberal ideologues to alter or fabricate quotations for propaganda purposes. So whenever anyone posts a thread based on a quote the first thing I do is look up the source and 9 times out of 10 its a misquote on some level--sometimes a complete hoax. But this one by tennman is mostly okay--it seems like it was probably altered by someone for aesthetic reasons.

Log, I was not questioning the source, but the blogger.  Whoever wrote that was misleading in their attempt to slam "conservatives."

Leave it to the left to swerve off into something like the order of the words and a misquote AND to actually USE that to try and make a point.

They will correct your spelling, your grammer, a myriad of things from down their noses, because........they are smarter eh?

Regardless if you built a time machine and folded space time sufficiently to walk into Jeffersons hearthroom, his quotes do not work for the left. so lets find the inaccuracies of the paraphrases and refocus.

Very pedestrian of you....
