WARNING: SELF-INDULGENT WHINE BELOW
Sorry, the "Brick House" bit was for someone else's benefit.

Here's a New Year's Resolution:

I'll try not to assume people harbor ill feelings toward me
when they assume I harbor ill feelings
because I try to promote for everyone (especially me)
more righteous/responsible living.

Also, I will continue my efforts to help the hurting, keeping much of it secret, even though blabbing about it might keep people from thinking I'm a cold-hearted Nazi or something.

Ahhh, that feels better.

I respectfully disagree with what you have written Janine.

I have read where blacks prospered after the war when left alone and not harrassed by racists.

I'll take a stab at the last question you asked BH:

It was

Why do you think so many people (and PREACHERS) read the Bible and still came out racist in the past?[/quote]

The first thing I want to say is that I don't know the answer to that questions, and any of my ramblings after that statement may or may not be the correct reasons.  But here goes.

I think many Christians looked to the commands in the Old Testament that were given to ISRAEL (not the church).  Those commands were put in place by God to keep the nation of Israel from being polluted by foreign gods.  They were laws like not intermarrying, driving all of the other races out, etc.  God was trying to keep a people holy, so that through that people he could bring salvation to the world.

But even in the midst of all that, he allowed for Gentiles to adopt the Jewish religion, if they so desired.  And once they did, they were considered a full fledged follower of God and could intermarry, ex. Ruth and Rahab (many racists miss this part of the OT scriptures).

Anyway, they think that those parts of the law FOR ISRAEL are still in force FOR CHRISTIANS.  Which they are not.  Thus, this fuels already racist tendencies which may be present in them.

Okay, that's my best shot!  Do you have any others?

He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; like one from whom men hide their face; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.

Well, speaking of politicians who make mistakes, if the building publicity over this forces Byrd to give up he's seat (and he is such a stubborn man that the process would be ugly), our current Democratic governor would name his replacement.  I do not trust this man at all; he's a poltician's politician.  I would imagine he would name either our ex-governor Caperton, the current head of the national College Board (the people in charge of the SATs), who did a good job for us economically but was in other ways an embarassment to the state (remind me to rant sometime about what he did to our school system--and was praised by Clinton for) or maybe even Jim Humphreys, who just spent millions of dollars of his own money on the most expensive congressional race in the country--and lost.

Sorry to get off subject a bit, just thinking some very bad thoughts. (I'm sure we have someone in the state who would make a credible replacement, but I'm equally sure our governor wouldn't appoint him or her). :lookaround:

With a name like “normfromga,” meaning “Norm from Georgia,” you have to expect some bigotry.

But I would suggest that (verbally) kicking someone in slats, and telling them to clean up their act, get an education, and work hard, and live up to their potential as an American, rather than looking for hand outs from Uncle Sugar, is just plain good (unsolicited) mentoring.

And I have met too many people who arrived here just a few decades ago, without a pot to plant petunias, or a window to throw them out of, some not even able to speak English, slowly establishing their own businesses, and eventually getting their kids a good education, through hard work and frugal living, to believe that the American Dream is a just fairy tale.

And if that is racism, so be it.
