kari--you may regret saying that.  I've been hearing that Republicans are gaining in late polling, which could mean that Spurly's half right in a different way than you mean.

Personally, since neither my congressional or Senate race is really contested (the Senate opponent, who I once produced a radio show for, is campaigning a bit, but he's such a nut case that getting his name out may not be a good thing--latest poll shows him behind 72%-17%) I've been more focused on local races, so I don't really have a feel for how things will turn out.

Of course some of us believe that the local level is where the real Democratic party exists, not the national.  The county-wide situation is all-Democratic here also, which is why I'm registered as a Democrat not an independent (Independants can't vote in our Democratic primary).  A few Republicans sneak in--sometimes as write-ins--when people are upset about something, but no one cares much about anything right now.

I just heard on the radio that of the 34 Senate seats up for grabs, 20 are republican seats and 14 are democratic.  That means that in order to gain control of the Senate, the Republicans hve to win 21 of the 34 races.  A tall task to be sure.

Kevin,

I was happy and sad last night as well!

I do have some hope in the governor-Henry seems to be neither the hard-line rightwinger, nor the good-old-boy dixiecrat.

And a least we banned cockfighting.  Oklahoma may be ready to move into the 20th century at last.  Of course, the 21st is still a distant dream.

I always cringe when I hear that someone wants the politicians to do something to stop abortion.  Abortion want be stopped in Congress, the Senate, the White House, or State Capitals.

Abortion will only be stopped when Christians share the good news of Jesus Christ with a hurting world.

From NJ to MN to OK to CA there are many interesting and close races for the Senate and the US house.  My thinking is that the house will stay in Republican hands while the Senate will stay in the hands of the Democrats.

What's your thinking?

Spurly,

I hope that the Republicans take control of the Senate. President Bush has already said that he WILL sign the ban on partial birth abortion. But he can't do that until the senate votes on it. Tom Daschle (D) has not even brought the legislation up for a vote. When questioned on this he said the issue is not important enough to be brought up with current things going on. That's sad.

If Republicans take the majority, Trent Lott ®, will become the majority leader. He has said if this happens one of his first acts will be to bring the legislation up for a vote.

I mean this in all seriousness: I am praying for a Republican victory.

in Christ,

Lee Wilson

Well,  Linda and I have voted!  New type of ballot this time that is counted by a computer scanner (fill in the dot with a #2 penci lead type system).

As usual, since I am a Republican (have been since I was 21 years old and could vote -- I'm now 54) I had very little say in county level elections.  Most people who are elected are on that level are Democrats (most of them are unopposed after the primary) as most people don't want to waste their money running as a Republican locally.  Fortunately, most are also very rural style conservative and quite independent of the Democratic party when it comes to local policy.

Marc, I am almost (almost) to the point I would be happy with a Republican majority in one house (I do think there should be some opposition to any president), if it means they could all quit campaigning and have the courage to actually do their jobs.

Let's just pray that Republicans can pull it off.

Well, I was happy and sad last night.  Nationally, the Republicans now have control of all three branches of government.  I hope that Bush and the legislature and the Courts will now work to implement the agenda the American people want.

On a state level, the Democrats have everything.  Which, in Oklahoma isn't that bad because most of the Democrats are conservative in nature - much more conservative than Democrats in other parts of the country.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Boy - were some of the races close.  Including the governor's race here.

Well, the Republicans have two years to show what they can do.  I will be pleasantly surprised if they actually do anything when it comes to abortion.  Seems there's always a lot of talk but very little action.  Bush should be able to get his judges by now, and maybe strengthen homeland security.

Like Kari, I always feel comfortable if there's at least some opposition, though.  I read once, but can't confirm it, that Will Rogers said that people elect Democratic congressmen to get them what they want and then elect Republican presidents to protect them from other people's Democratic congressmen.  Doesn't sound like a bad system to me.
