I will merge this as an update with whatever thread I mentioned my Uncle Duval in, when I get a chance -- but I wanted to let y'all know he lost -- or won, depending on how you look at it -- his fight with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, late Sunday p.m./ Monday a.m.

I may not make it up to the graveside memorial in North Carolina Friday, but I sure would like to.  Me being out of work right now sure seems to make it a good time to go and re-connect with my Mama's part of the family.  You know how it is, the one great thing about a funeral is the way you get to re-connect with cousins, etc.

Anyway -- my Aunt Christine sure will be bereft after all the years together.  And my nervine little Aunt Nell, who was so good to my Mama in her final illness, actually hopped in her car and drove in the darkness from NC down to Virginia to be with 'Tine, as soon as she heard.  Aunt Nell just does not take spontaneous road trips, and never drives at night -- but there she went, zip!

I guess when family needs you, you go.

I am sorry to hear of your loss Janine. But as you said, he is already home now.

I pray for all your family to be comforted in that.

And yesterday we found that, in about the same space of time as Uncle Duval's passing, one of our older "pillars", our sister Mel, who was over in Texas with one of her daughters due to Mel's battle with circulation problems and congestive heart failure, has died.

Goodness.  Mel taught my Mike's Bible classes when he was a little tyke.  She has been a stalwart all these years, and an example of the graceful way to handle it when your conscience and the Spirit lead you in ways that make your elders go funny on you.  She will be so badly missed, I can't tell you how badly.

My poor little congregation has had so many losses in itself and among the family and friends peripheral to it, these past few years.

I hope Mike and I ended up there to help them weather the storms.  It looks like that; having had so many of our own, at least it's a familiar path.

Janine, I'm so sorry for the loss of your uncle and other church members.  It seems as time goes on, the welcoming committee on the other side is getting larger.  We can rejoice because we know for certain that we will see our deceased loved ones again one day when we ourselves join them in heaven.  It still hurts when they leave this world, but remember, it's just for a little while.

They do say that Death, our enemy, is at least an honorable enemy, working within the bounds set for him -- and by the end of the fight, sometimes, the warriors have more in common with each other than they do with each their "side".

In other words, there are times when Death is not an unwelcome visitor.

*Sigh*

Still, living past the battle can be awfully painful.
