CHINA Pastor Gong Shengliang has told relatives he may soon die in the feared Hongshan Prison in Hubei Province. He has asked to be transferred to another prison. "Otherwise just come and pick up my corpse," he told his sisters during a 10-minute visit. He had to be carried into the visiting hall, as he could no longer walk.
Pray God in His mercy will allow Pastor Gong to be sent to a better prison. Give thanks for all the people whom Pastor Gong has led to the Lord. Pray the guards, who have to accompany him everywhere he goes, will come to believe in our Savior.
VOM sources reported that a 100-year-old building that housed an unregistered Chinese house church was badly damaged on March 11th, and then completely destroyed March 31st. The church of about 300 members had existed for the past 20 years. When neighbors who were not Christians complained to the authorities, they were arrested and held for 15 days.
Pray the members will form new groups in their neighborhoods, and the church will grow. Pray the neighbors who were bold enough to complain will come to know the Head of the Church-Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:23).
COLOMBIA Fighting between paramilitaries and guerrillas abated during Holy Week, but war-weary Christians in the state of Choco know they cannot count on even a few days of peace. Beginning in October, a wave of conflict in three villages has forced about 550 people, many of them Christians, from their homes. A pastor in the state capital, Quibdo, estimates that of the 35 families in his church, about a third of them are displaced. The United Nations ranks Colombia's 3 million displaced as the world's second-highest population of internal refugees after Sudan's, which is estimated between 3.7 million and 4.5 million.
Pray the refugees will draw close to Jesus and find their hiding place in Him. Pray God will open the eyes of the paramilitaries and guerrillas to see that they are fighting Him. Pray the Holy Spirit will move in power to stop the conflict.
NEPAL On March 18th, just before Manja Tamang's trial for murder that supporters say he did not commit, an opposing lawyer petitioned some of the judges to cancel the case. In 2002, Tamang was falsely accused and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Last year he had two unsuccessful appeal hearings before the Supreme Court. According to Gospel for Asia (GFA) officials, this case has been dismissed and will have to be completely restarted. Some GFA leaders were able to meet with Tamang in prison to tell him the news and encourage him with the story of Joseph in Genesis 39-41.
Pray Tamang's imprisonment will be an instrument of good rather than evil (Genesis 50:20, Romans 8:28). Pray the glory of the Lord will surround Tamang and bring his captors to repentance. Pray for his early release.
SRI LANKA A Christian Fellowship Church that had been closed for three months following an attack in late December was attacked again on Easter Sunday. About 10 people, including women and children, were injured. The church had been forced to sign a "temporary" suspension of church services following the near riot in December; however, no date was given when services could be resumed. On Easter Sunday, a small crowd of about 30 people, led by an influential Buddhist monk, interrupted the gathering of 100 church members and demanded that they leave the building. The crowd threw stones and beat the believers as they were leaving.
Pray the Christians will remain faithful to the Lord. Pray that as they gather in smaller groups, Buddhists in their neighborhoods will come to hear God's Word. Pray Jesus will reveal Himself to the attackers and draw them into His loving arms.
VIETNAM An estimated 400 Christians have been killed in brutal repression of peaceful and prayerful demonstrations by Montagnard Christians in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, according to the Barnabas Fund, quoting information from The Montagnard Foundation. On Saturday, April 10th, up to 400,000 Vietnamese Christians, from the Degar people, gathered in several cities to demonstrate against the government's refusal to allow them to follow the Christian faith freely. In Buonmathuot, the demonstrators were shot at, beaten with electric batons and bombarded with rocks and stones. Hundreds were killed, and many others suffered broken bones. After the demonstrations began, the Foundation said that no attempt was made by the Christians to use force.
Pray the Montagnard Christians will continue faithfully and harmoniously. Pray God will comfort them with His merciful peace that no one can destroy. Pray the Holy Spirit will convict the attackers and lead them to Christ.
