I have been looking for this place!

 Banging head against wall

you say it is in existence? or just in cyber-imagination?

I feel like a miss-shaped, octagonal peg in a pentagonal hole.

(five steps; five acts; five ...  ha!)

and the re-shaper crew is on the prowl with dull knives.

(or maybe it is them that are dull, but their knives are sharp?)

I don't have the address but here is how you recognize the house. It will be the plainest house on the block, there won't be any Christmas decorations, the people inside inside will show a remarkable lack of enthusiasm, someone will extend an invitation to come on in like they think you are lost even though everyone there has been visiting the house for 50 years. On the plus side, the meals are pretty good (unless this happens to be one of the safe houses where the residents don't think it is proper to eat in the house).

Snaggles,

sarcasm stupendous!
cynicism capital!

but, seriously, I have known a few of these safe houses, but they are hard to find.

I met an elder once, in Nashville, at the LU SC, and he dripped with kindness.
with him was his preacher, a fine example of negative narcissism.
it was like an emerald set in a cow patty!

again, I knew a sister in Huntsville, who was so sweet in her walk with Jesus.

then, there was a men's community Bible study group. (not really a RM SH)

one more, quickly, a few more sisters I know: wife, an aunt, daughter ...
their walk is non-judgemental, judicious, Jesus-like.

but, alas, these are one-on-ones, not small groups (excepting #3).

take it where you can find it?!

(and, it seems mostly in the female circle?!)

You've clearly never visited our CofC.  This is 180 from truth, right down to the wreath & red bow on the door.

Or Jaime's, which I think has been infiltrated by Baptists.

You are on the road to apostasy. Watch out - before you know it people will clap after baptisms, women will ask questions in bible study, you will sing songs from the back of the hymnal, your preacher will go to the mayor's prayer breakfast and the community will stop thinking the CoC is somehow related to the Amish.

Your perceptions are outdated in most of the CofC's I've been involved with over the past 20 years. Too much broad-brushing, applying what some do to be what all do.

I know we are making progress in some areas of the country but in the small town conservative congregations with which I am familiar it is still 1955.

Isn't autonomy great?

I realize this is off topic but I wonder how our porgressiveness/conservativeness corelates to what church papers we read? Around here we are Gospel Minutes and Gospel Advocate people (I tried the GA for a couple of years and then gave it up; it is a time warp to the 1950s and 60s). What do people in the happy clappy wreath on the door advent candle congregations read?

Christianity Today?

I read CT to broaden my horizons and so I won't be accused of Theological Inbreeding. Reading it makes me realize how different (not necessarily better or worse, just different) we are in the CoC. Many of the issues brought up in CT are things that I have never heard discussed in church: what to do about Gays, political activism, the role of the patristic writers, inter-denominational relations, return to 2nd and 3rd century worship styles, problems with church leaders on the national level (we don't even have a national level), arguments within church colleges, problems in 3rd world countries, gigantic youth rallies with Christian rock bands I have never heard of.

It's all about extremes with you this weekend, huh?  Rolling on floor laughing

We're not at that end either.  We read the Christian Chronicle.   I don't read Gospel Minutes and the Gospel Advocate.  I have high blood pressure when I do.
