A church of 120 that is producing a full-time minister every year who then goes out to the world is quite likely not at a milk stage.

St. Francis of Assisi I think understood the balance. "Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."

Now I'm really impressed. When you said they helped from 17 to 66 families a week I pictured a great big church in the city. If a congregation of 120 can do that it is no wonder so many people (I was going to say "men" but since this is DoC there might be a few women in there - covered on a different thread) are leaving wanting to go out and do the Lord's work.

I don't have the address but here is how you recognize the house. It will be the plainest house on the block, there won't be any Christmas decorations, the people inside inside will show a remarkable lack of enthusiasm, someone will extend an invitation to come on in like they think you are lost even though everyone there has been visiting the house for 50 years. On the plus side, the meals are pretty good (unless this happens to be one of the safe houses where the residents don't think it is proper to eat in the house).
You've clearly never visited our CofC.  This is 180 from truth, right down to the wreath & red bow on the door.

You are on the road to apostasy. Watch out - before you know it people will clap after baptisms, women will ask questions in bible study, you will sing songs from the back of the hymnal, your preacher will go to the mayor's prayer breakfast and the community will stop thinking the CoC is somehow related to the Amish.

(I know I'm late to this discussion.)

But, let's see... in the mainline CofCs in my area...

1)  Clapping after baptisms is the norm.
2)  Women probably make more comments and ask more questions in Bible class than men.
3)  We not only sing songs "from the back of the hymnal," but we sing songs not even in the hymnal when they're *GASP* projected on the screen.
4)  Our preacher is frequently involved all kinds of community events, including prayer breakfasts.
5)  The Amish?

I guess we must be breaking the speed limit on the ole road to apostasy.  Smile

I will pray for your souls, you poor lost people.

  The Amish?

Yeah. We call each other brother and sister, we don't dance, smoke, drink, play cards, enjoy sex, or swim in mixed company, we don't smile during services, we don't do Easter or Christmas, we don't associate with "the denominations", and we have our own secret language (guideguardandoprotectus, laying on beds of affliction, separate and apart from the Lords supper, see us to our separate places of abode).

Our preacher when I was kid was against mixed bathing and I was down with that until I realized he was talking about swimming.

I remember a Sunday School Teacher "scolding" me and my sister for advocating a lake party for our class. He said he was against mixed bathing. I snidely retorted, "There will be no soap involved, sir!"

I realize this is off topic but I wonder how our porgressiveness/conservativeness corelates to what church papers we read? Around here we are Gospel Minutes and Gospel Advocate people (I tried the GA for a couple of years and then gave it up; it is a time warp to the 1950s and 60s). What do people in the happy clappy wreath on the door advent candle congregations read?
It's all about extremes with you this weekend, huh?  Rolling on floor laughing

We're not at that end either.  We read the Christian Chronicle.   I don't read Gospel Minutes and the Gospel Advocate.  I have high blood pressure when I do.

I believe the Gospel Advocate, Christian Courier, and Spiritual Sword are all excellent publications.

this post started out, TIC, in reference to a "safe house".

to me, a SH is a place one can go to escape an abusive spouse, or maybe a secret apt. for police to use,
hiding a witness threatened by the mob, etc.

I just have not found many such places in fellowships of the COC, esp. those who read the Gospel Advocate, Christian Courier, and Spiritual Sword. (however, I do read them, from time to time, just to keep a balanced perspective and see if I remember incorrectly!)

I just long for a little more "academic freedom", Rom.14 style, among us.  but, I have grown weary looking ...

Well, the Courier certainly doesn't seem to like ACU. Is that good or bad?

I try not to read any brotherhood publications at all.  If I do pick one up, it's just as poisonous and nasty and covering identical topics to the issues I picked up and read 10, 15, 20 years ago.  All that ever changes is the typeface.  If I'm lucky.

That's of the ones mentioned above, however.  Sometimes others come to us in the mail, filled with actual helpful thought-provoking articles and reports of good works done by Christians and churches growing and congregations uniting and so on.  Those I like.

i do not get how this thread concerns a 'safe house'.  it's clear some of us contributors think we are witty and perceptive...but once you've been around a few years you figure out that as soon as you perceive yourself in that fashion, you have deluded yourself.

regardless of what we now think/feel, it does not take long for everyone to soon become the 'old dying movement'.  we had best just live rightly for God and care for some others.
