The X-Files: Total Recall
« on: Tue Nov 08, 2011 - 21:22:27 »

Agent Fox Mulder sat up in bed. The clock showed two in the afternoon. What had happened last night?

The last thing he remembered was being pushed out of a car into a cotton field. The rest was a blurr at the moment with only flashes of faces and a sound like a dog whimpering that echoed in his head.

He felt a sting in his hand and pulled it up in front of his face to find it wrapped with a blood-stained bandage. He started to unwrap the bandage when the phone rang. The caller I.D. showed Agent Dana Scully.

Mulder picked up the phone. "Scully?"

"Mulder, Where are you? you were suppose to meet me at the office at twelve." Agent Dana Scully looked down at her watch again. She glanced around at the other agents wondering what story Mulder would have this time.

Mulder sniffled and looked around the room. What state was he in?

"Scully I'll call you back."

He stumbled to the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror. The dark circles under his eyes were extreme. He splashed water on his face and breathed in the moist air. He returned to the mirror and noticed scabbed-over slashes streaked across his chest. He touched the sore and the sensation triggered a memory of a clawed hand scrapping him.

He hurried to the phone and dialed.

"Scully, I need help. I need you to come to..." Mulder saw the hotel address on the stationary on top of his nightstand. "...5523 Helton Drive, Florence, Alabama."

"Florence, AL? how did you get there?" Scully pinched the bridge of her nose, "You know what nevermind. I'll be there as soon as I can. Don't go anywhere." Scully hung up the phone grabbing the paper that she had written the address on and her coat. She flung her Purse over her shoulder and headed for the door.

Scully's heels clicked on the asphalt as she made her way to the car. He mind running through the numbers of ways Mulder could have gotten to Florence, Al. They didn't even have a case there, however Mulder was known to find trouble.

She quickly unlocked the car and got in. She thought of the conversation Mulder and her had before he disappeared. He had a lead to their case of unusual attacks. He wouldn't tell her the lead's name or even where they where. Just for her to trust him.

Scully pulled into the small hotel. No one was in site, she looked back at the paper with the address.

"Shoot," No room number. Scully pulled her cell phone from her purse and dialed Mulder's number. She listened to it's ring until finally Mulder picked up.

Mulder was watching for Scully through the room window and within seconds of her parking he opened the passanger door and sat down without a word.

Scully waiting a few seconds before speaking. "Mulder are you okay?"

Mulder pointed behind the car. "Head east. Stop at the coffee shop."

Scully pulled onto the main road and headed east. The only sound in the car was the radio playing an old Johnny Cash song. Scully spun the radio knob silent. "Mulder, what happened."

Mulder snickered, appearing partly insane for a few seconds before his solemn expression returned. "I don't know. I remember random parts. A creature. I wasn't supposed to see it."

Scully pulled into the coffee shop and Mulder opened the door and got out of the car before Scully had completely stopped the vehicle. She followed Mulder into the shop and saw him already seated. Just as she sat down across from him a waitress started her routine at the table. "Welcome ya'll. Feel free to look over the menus. We have--"

Mulder interrupted. "Black coffee and pecan pie."

The waitress dropped her smile and turned to Scully. "Just coffee please. Thank you."

She walked away and Scully reached out to Mulder's hand. "Please tell me what you remember." Mulder pulled away from her and leaned back against the seat. "I can't make sense of the pictures in my head or else I would."

Bells clanked together as a thin, older man walked into the cafe. He adjusted his suit and walked to a table four tables away from Mulder and Scully. Mulder had his head in his hands starting at the table top. The older man lit a cigarette and Mulder smelled it. "Isn't it against the law to smoke in public in Alabama?" He stood before Scully could answer and walked to where the man was sitting. Mulder slammed his hand on the table before the man looked up.

Scully still sat at the table and was watching Mulder. She recognized the older man and said to herself, "Cancer Man."

Mulder didn't wait for the man to speak. "What are you doing here?!"

Cancer Man sucked his cigarette without seeming to take notice of Mulder.

Mulder again slammed the table with his hand and Cancer Man slowly looked up. "Don't I have the right to pay someone to burn my mashed potatos too?"

Mulder spoke softly, more aware of a waitress clearing a table. "What happened to me last night?"

"If I knew, do you think I'd tell you?"

Scully stormed to the table, stopping in front of Cancer Man.

"If you know something it's best to tell us." Scully kept her eyes on Mulder. "If you want to or not, this is an investigation and if you know anything about it..." She turns toward Cancer Man. "...I'm sure you would like to answer the question here, instead of in an interrogation room." Scully placed her hand on Mulder's arm hoping to calm him enough to get clear answers of what happened.

Cancer Man blew a cloud of smoke in Scully's face, causing her to cough and turn away.

"We both know I would be rescued from your interrogation room. You know better."

Mulder and Scully exchanged glances and looked back at their table to see their waitress placing their order on the table.

Cancer Man pressed his cigarette on the table top until it stopped smoking. "I'm here because I want something."

Mulder remained expressionless and suddenly quiet.

Scully glanced at Mulder, than back to Cancer man narrowing her eyes. She crossed her arms over her chest. "What exactly do you want?"  Silence filled the diner, the tick tock of the clock overhead echoed in her ear. She held her breath waiting for the answer to come.

Cancer man smiled. "I want what you want agent Scully. Meaning. It's just that I choose to find it in different places. Places you can't even imagine going."

Mulder fumed. "He's part of this. I know it." He sat across from Cancer Man. "Don't keep this from me. Just tell me. How's it going to hurt you?"

Cancer Man straigtened his tie. "It won't hurt me agent Fox. But knowing might hurt you."

The waitress walked over with Cancer Man's order of an omlette and grits. "Will there be anything else?" Cancer Man shook his head.
