The group made their way quickly back to camp, where-upon Bumble consumed a double portion of their rations with considerable gusto. Wilk, Wolf and Pup shared discretely the various roots and shoots, while Kindra helped herself to the her last bits of rock hard cheese and bread. It was a mid-day meal.
"They got themselves in a considerable mess," Bumble explained soberly. "You don't go after a dragon's horde not expecting trouble. I count meself lucky" Kindra nodded agreement, finally placing the subtle lingering scent that had wafted up from the Dwarf from time to time. She could see that his beard was freshly singed.
"Dicretion is the better part of valor' in which part, you have saved your life," Kindra murmured. "Hah!," the Dwarf resounded! "Truth! Those words should be written down somewhere!"
Kindra sighed. Knowing from previous efforts that Bumble was not ammenable to threats, she simply waited for the full story. It was the bargain, food for information.
"Bit of a stablemate," finally, Kindra's patience was to be rewarded. "Dragon says, solve this puzzle and I'll let you live. Me friends say, let us go and we'll let your children live, holed up as they were at the nest. Them eggs be shinny enough to make em think they was the treasure at first! Me, I shot out after that first warning blast." Bumbles stroked his beard sorryfully, then begain to pick his teeth on a woody stem.
"They're alive still. You are sure?"
Bumble nodded. "I waited, I did, at the cavern door. Voices carry, you see. I heard Slackjaw talking. He be poorly named. I think maybe his momma named him that just to hope he'd shut that mouth of his. He be talking still, I'm sure, til your friend got there. I tried to go in with her. I did! But then woosh at the cavern entrance and I was right back with you."
Kindra shook her head, at a loss for furthe words. She cast her gaze upon the three sleeping creatures. The sun was warm, even in the shade of the great Rune trees. If it weren't for Bumble and Jenifaire's rahter mysterious perdicament, she'd gladly join their slumbers. Bumble had already assured her that he did know himself know they way back. The hole had closed up, causing him to leap forward and into the branches of the Rune tree itself.
