The Seventh-day Adventist's CLEAR WORD BIBLE!!
« on: Fri Jun 26, 2009 - 10:39:26 »
In 1994, the SDA church released ‘The Clear Word Bible’. First printed by the press at Southern Adventist University, it is now published by their main publishing house (The Review and Herald Publishing Association).

Due to criticism over the liberal application of the SDA interpretation of scripture, this book is now simply called ‘The Clear Word’.  The edition in my possession denies that it is a new translation but calls it an ‘interpretive paraphrase’.  Other Clear Word editions have used different words to describe it as well.

SDA leaders have made clarifying statements concerning the viewpoint presented in ‘The Clear Word’ as well.

These “insights” are not margin notes.  They are written into the text where the reader will have a difficult time discerning the changes if they are not adequately familiar with the authentic text of the real Bible.

The preface makes the claim that it is not for serious study or for public reading in churches.  They can then distance themselves from the now developed practice of individual members who do use ‘The Clear Word’ for a study reference, for clarifying concepts connected to SDA beliefs and for reading in church.

You will no doubt hear protests from individuals saying that they do not do these things and, maybe, that they don’t even own one of these books.  Such protestations are hollow in light of sponsorship, promotion and distribution of this book through official SDA channels and publications.

A recent search of the online SDA book centers Bible section reveals 14 out of 33 available Bibles are versions of ‘The Clear Word’, including ‘The Clear Word for Kids’.

Sale fliers that still come to my door in the mail feature several different versions of ‘The Clear Word’; offerings of other versions of the Bible are noticeably absent or presented in minimal numbers.

The SDA church publishes a magazine format study guide for use in their Sabbath School classes.  Invariably, the Clear word is a featured advertisement on one of the inner flyleaf pages paralleling the promotion of the Ellen White Notes available for each set of lessons that are released.

A Google search of the name will produce many honest evaluations of the content of the 'Clear Word' in comparison to the words of a real Bible.

Clear Word Bible is a paraphrase Bible.   They usually say this at the pulpit.  It is was not written to replace traditional Scripture.

Thank you David, for starting to summarize my post.

Yes it is a paraphrase combining the Holy Bible with the insights of Ellen White.

When they do identify the use of 'The Clear Word' when it is used in the pulpit, it is becomes a confidence booster for the SDA audience hearing an SDA interpretation of Scripture read from Scripture.

As such, it does have the effect of replacing traditional Scripture despite claims to the contrary by the author and others.
Current the Clear word Bible was never meant to replace any Bible.  So what is your problem with it?  If you don't like it don't read it.

SDA's don't use the Clear word Bible like some other denominations that claimed that their particular Bible translation is the right one.  The Clear World Bible is a paraphrase Bible.  If this Bible has some Mrs. White's quotations on it, what is the big problem?

Thanks for asking!!!

So why does the Seventh-day Adventist Church promote AND SELL this book as a BIBLE?
