This forum is for fellowship, encouragement, advice and discussion for parents of special needs children.

This can certainly be a place of prayer and sharing of successes or failures that only the parents of special needs children can understand. This forum is for, but not limited to, the parents of children who are challenged by Autism, Down syndrome, ADD & ADHD, Allergies & Asthma, Aspergers & PDD, Birth Defects, General Children's Disabilities, Genetic Disorders, Learning & Education challenges, Neurological Brain Injury, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Premature Birth, Speech & Communication challenges or Vision Impairment.

This forum is a great ideaa, I have 1 daughter with ADHD, Anxiety disorder, Diabetes and Dyslexia but is also gifted with a high IQ. A very mixed bag!! My other daughter is Dyslexic also. I look forward to sharing and supporting other parents.

I have 2 non verbal autistic children Mathew age 9,Rebecca age 6 and I also have disabilities.dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

I am looking for a place where there are parents with similar issues to deal with, I hope I have found it. My son is 10 years old and has been diagnosed (when he was 5) with ADD and ADHD. He has been on all of the "frontline" medications and can no longer be on any of them as they caused him to develop a facial tick, not that they were helping him to manage well anyways. He also does not have much sweets and such as we are asked often"how much sugar has he had today?" He is on nothing now and has a very difficult time controlling his impulses and acting appropriately. I am going to be homeschooling him next year (with God's help) and need to know if anyone out there has successful information about things to try that have worked for you in dealing with discipline and behavioral problems. We have also done a WIDE variety of punishments and reward charts/promises. Nothing seems to be helping or working at this point, he keeps getting caught touching and taking things and getting sent out of sunday school and children's church. My husband and I are at a loss of what to try or work on at this point. And yes, we have tried prayer, not as a last resort but as a continued support. Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, theories, encouragements.....

I don't have a child with those conditions.  I do have two children with epilepsy though.  Is there a support group near you?  I found support groups invaluable for me as it lets you mix with other parents and people that have the problems your child does and they have suggestions that worked for them that you can try.  Maybe you could find a support group - either for your specific problem or a general support group as that would at least be a help for you both.  Your doctor may know of any support groups near you.

Some people have seen good results with fish oil for adhd and other issues.  I think if you are homeschooling, I would look into hands-on cirriculum.  I recommend Teaching Textbooks for math, because the material is broken up into short bytes and there is immediate feedback.  Google their site and you can check out examples.  I also like Timberdoodle for recommendations about cirriculum.
