Barry Bonds?
« on: Tue Apr 06, 2004 - 13:36:28 »
I grew tired of the blow out in the NCAA championship game last night so I switched over to watch the Astros vs. the Giants.

I just knew when Barry came up with two runners on base, and the Giants down by three runs that he was going to drive it out of the park, and sure enough that is exactly what he did.  What a ball player - and he looks like he is in better shape than ever this year

What do you think?  Where does he belong in the record book?  Where will he finish?

I always thought of Bonds as a choker, considering how bad his stats were in the playoffs for his career.  Therefore, I didn't think he had a chance of breaking the season home run record.  I kept thinking that he would cool off; and even if he didn't, I thought that as the season progressed toward the end, he would choke.  Even though I typically don't watch much baseball until the playoffs, I started to watch the Giants to see Bonds.  What I saw was how few pitches he was given to hit late in the year; yet when he did get one, he hit it out.  I don't know how a hitter could see so few good pitches yet come through so often.  I now respect just how good the guy is.

BTW, I think he will catch Ruth.  Aaron?  Maybe.  Tough to say.  Bonds hasn't slowed down yet, but at some point he has to tail off.  Or injuries could come along.  I thought Griffey Jr. was the one that would challenge the record.  He was consistent and productive at an early age.  He had been relatively injury free for years, then....

Bonds says he is out after 2005, of course he has been known to make rash statements like that before. But this time I am inclined to believe him, if SF shows know signs of being a serious contender after next year he will probably bow out with around 730 HR's, which means Aaron will still hold the record.

My Humble 2 cents

Rick
