That he didn't ID it for 30 years is odd... or is it?

I knew that Alexander Campbell qouted the Apocrypha in the MH several years ago.  I happened to be reading an old book containing  MH copies, and by sheer chance happened to open the Catholic Bible I had and noticed the two qoutes in each book. I was reading from MH and the Catholic BIble a little at a time interchangeably that day.  I must say I was very, very, shocked indeed!

Interesting! Over the years I have decided that the saying \"neither Catholic, Protestant or Jew\" would describe the RM movement better if it were \"Catholic, Protestant and Jew\" since we share a border and bridge the territories of all three.

I like the apocropha too! There are some great stories about women!

Greetings from the land of beer and cheese, :-).

I have been doing some research for a class I will be teaching @ Southside this next quarter on the Apocrypha.  I have always like the Apocrypha (David deSilva has a wonderful new book called \"Invitation to the Apocrypha\").  Any way I wanted to find out if Campbell ever made any kind of statement on the Apocrypha, ever quoted from it, or demonstrated
knowledge of it?  Well he never made a statement but he does quote from it on occasionally.  But what really shocked me is that he quotes from 1 Esdras 4.41 on the mast head of the MH every month for thirthy years!!!  I did not know that.

\"Great is the truth and mighty above all things, and will prevail\" is left unidentified by Campbell (why I do not know) but it comes straight out of 1 Esdras 4.41.  He also quotes this exact same text in his earlier Walker Debate (1820).

That Campbell used this on his mast head for 30+ years simply blew me away!!

Shalom,

Janine, I don't know for sure.  Campbell quotes the Gospel of John (with identification) and then below it the quote from 1 Esdras (without identification).  Why I don't know.

That Campbell did not know the source seems to me nearly an impossibility.  He did quote the text in his Walker Debate (this is ten years before Millennial Harbinger was published (i.e. 1830).  Campbell, was an incredibly well read person and had an encyclopedic memory (he could quote the Gospels in the Greek!).

I am at a loss,
Bobby Valentine

I am continually amazed at the depth of A. Campbell's scholarship. I'd be very surprised if he was not aware of the source of his quote. Perhaps he didn't identify it because it was from the acpocrypha and he was not sure how comfortable his readers would be with such non-canonical material on the masthead of his paper? Sounds like you're engaging in a fascinating study. You know Dee Colvett always set great store by the apocrypha. He often quoted from the book of Wisdom. When you guys were here last you mentioned doing a class on the Tolkein and the Lord of the Rings. Have you done that yet? You asked me about   books on Tolkein and LOTR. There are two good ones on Tolkein and the theology behind LOTR: Tolkein: Man and Myth by Joseph Pirece and J. R. R. Tolkein: Author of the Century. Pax vobiscum.

Barry you sure do spend a lot of time reading about the Churches of Christ for being an \"atheist.\"  Seems if I were an atheist I would follow Paul's advice -- eat, drink lots of Milwaukee beer, for tomorrow we die

I do not mind, however, for I have faith in the working of God's gracious Spirit in your life -- no matter how hard you try to deny it.  He is, as Augustine said, the hound of heaven.  Watch out -- he may find you yet
