Thanks, Wiley.

We live near Pensacola, Florida.  I was leery of giving our location in my first post because of the nature of our church split.  I did not want to imply that I was "throwing stones" at either of the two groups from the church split.  We continue to have close friends in each group.

Can't help you much with Pensacola churches.  Maybe someone else can.  That's one are I have never had any contact with.

Church splits are tough.  Been through two splits in the last four years and we are finally in a stable and growing church about 35 miles from our home that is a more grace centered church than the small ones we came from--which were very legalistic.  In both cases, the splits were personality oriented rather than Scripture oriented.  Involved control issues to a certain extent in one and mostly in the other!

Still have friends in the last one.  The first one split itself out of existance!

I went to a Calvary Chapel for a few years, and it split up. To me, it doesn't make any difference in the label--our hope is in the relationship with each other and with God. He will show you and sometimes we just have to wait on His timing for where he would have us. It just maybe in the house of our neighbor.

Confused, Greetings! My name is Bobby Valentine.  i know about your church split -- if you are in Pensacola.  My sister and her husband attend ....... (I had even applied for the pulpit there) and has spoken at length over what has happened.  I personally feel it is a great shame that this has happened for many folks -- like you, my sister and countless others -- are damaged by this kind of trauma.

I wish it could be different.  I have lived through a painful split @ my home church in North Alabama and there is nothing I can say that will take away the sense of nausea that comes with it.

I will simply remember you in my prayers.

Hello Cornfused

Sorry to hear about the church split there. Satan tries everything to destroy the church, but he cant. We must stay strong and focus on being true disciples and to be part of a body that respects the word of God and follows it. I have spoken to a few Calvary Chapel members and I have looked into their teaching. They do reject the teaching that one must be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. They teach the common "sinners prayer" mode of salvation. I studied with a young man from Calvary Chapel and after sharing the gospel with him and how it's obeyed, he spoke to his Calvary Chapel preacher. Since then, the young man would not speak to me.

I would suggest you seek another Church of Christ in the area. God will open doors. And as I said before, seek His ways and His kingdom (Matthew 6:33) and remain faithful to His call :)

God bless

Hope this helps..

RPC :)

Hey, cornfused...

Just looking at the cocn website, there are six congregations of the church of Christ in Penasacola:

     Bellview Church of Christ
     Gateway Church of Christ
     Innerarity Point Church of Christ
     Leonard St. Church of Christ
     Scenic Hills Church of Christ
     Warrington Church of Christ

Even if you discard two --- and I have no idea which may have been the two your wife rules out --- that leaves four to check out.  Have you?

We've a good friend & his wife in Pace, Fla.; he's the young people's minister there.  That's panhandle, isn't it?  I'll have to see if he's connected to any of these congregations.  Any group they worked with would be a good one to worship with.

I'll let you know.   :)

POSTSCRIPT:  Happy Mothers' Day!

Our friend preaches for Scenic Hills coC.  Any place that hired him, that he & his wife would be willing to work with, bears checking out as a possible church home. :)

I do not agree with NYC, the organizational church, no matter the label, all have the same stances--their lists rule out over everyone else's. I would just look for a loving, serving, assembly, instead of seeking correctness.

I'm new to "posting" here, but I've been lurking for some time.  My family and I have recently been through a church split- basically, in very general terms, along conservative (older members) vs liberal (younger members) lines involving the worship service.

I have been "born and raised" in the c of C, and graduated from a c of C university.  Previous to a move about a year ago, we attended Oak Hills c of C in San Antonio, where Max Lucado preaches.  Needless to say, we are having a very difficult time with the split.  My wife is pretty adamant about not attending either of the churches from the split; however, as a life long c of C'er, I'm having difficulty leaving.

There are many on this board who know much more about Calvary Chapel, Bible churches and Community churches than I, and I'm asking for some guidance in the loving spirit and nature of this board.

God Bless,
cornfused ???

Out of curiosity, where are you located now.  The last time my wife and I were at Oak Hills was before they moved to the new building!

I don't know if we have any non-denom "Bible church" members on the forum or not.  My brother has historically associated with the "Bible Churches".  However, I still don't have a clue to where they actually stand on some issues.  Haven't heard of any that would fall into a non-IM category, if you are a definite non-IM person.  From what my brother has told me in the past, they tend to be strongly grace oriented, and some have charismatic tendencies (a category which my brother does not fall into).  The only other churches in this general area that would fall into the mentioned categories are charismatic in nature and do use names similar to Calvary Chapel or Grace Chapel.

I know of a couple of Community Churches in several cities that were outgrowths of splits in the CoC and hold to alot of the theology of the CoC with some exceptions such as music.  They also tend to be more contemporary praise oriented in style of worship.

Sorry I can't help you more than that.   If you will give us your present location, someone here can probably point you to a grace centered CoC or a Community Church that you may feel comfortable with.

Calvary Chapel has a website:  Calvary Chapel

I belong to a c of C but I have attended a Calvary Chapel in Colorado and I listen to their radio station every evening as I go to sleep.  I prefer the c of C I attend; however, I was comfortable with Calvary Chapel.  They do have instrumental music.

Not all Bible or Community churches are the same so you would have to check them out.  I think some are great and some aren't but I would say the same thing about some c of C's.

A church split is never comfortable.  I would wonder if you couldn't fit with one of the groups in your area.  Someone on this board, I think it was Bob Hendren said something to the effect that "if you are looking for a perfect church and find it, don't join as it will no longer be perfect."  Churches are made up of people so none will be perfect.

I hate seeing old labelled whatever and young labelled something else.  We all have one Saviour.  Agewise I would be in the old group but my focus is on Jesus and that has nothing to do with age.

You, your wife and the c of Cs in your area are in my prayers.

Bill

confused,

Without trying to be condescending nor tell you what your probably know, I would recommend you attend services and look for the Spirit. By their fruits ye shall know them.

I have traveled my whole life, different countries, different languages, different cultures. Been places where the coC nor CoC even exist!!! Yes those places do exist. Now I preach in a idC in Venezuela.  (That translates to coC)

I know even some of our more grace centered brothers here will raise their eyes at this and I am sure the legalists will, but I recommend to you that you go to Him in prayer and fasting and ask Him to lead you to a congregation. Once He does, do not even look at what the name on the door is, look for the Spirit inside!!

Cornfused, the Calvary Chapel here, (North Alabama) seems to be very much into following the direction laid down by their leader. So, I would assume, much will depend on the nature of the leader. In the situation here, the leader felt called upon to have everyone show up at the building at 5 am and 7 pm each day for a period of prayer. "God had told him some incredible thing would or was going to happen if they did."
So, they met twice a day, each day of the week for some months to do this. So far, nothing seems to have happened, but maybe their prayers prevented it. I don't know if this is a norm for Calvary Chapels, probably not, but I would talk to the leader and see what his or her theology is, but that's me.

Thanks to everyone.  I appreciate your thoughtfulness, kind sentiments and prayers.

Please continue to pray for us so that our eyes will be opened and our ears will hear what the Lord has planned for us.

It amazes me to realize the kinship we have together in Jesus Christ.

Hey Bobby-

It is truly a small world.  I would be interested in knowing where your sister and her husband now attend services.  From reading your previous posts on other threads, I believe you would have been an excellent choice for the church.

Thanks for your prayers...

Cornfused,
For curiousity,I wonder if you would mind scrolling down to the worship section and see if the split is because of the contemporary type service being presented.Under singing, clapping, etc.

God bless,Charles

If you wait until you find a group that gets it all "right" 100% of the time, well, you'll be waiting until you enter the gates of Heaven...

On the other hand, to happily leap in amongst a group because you like their loving, serving attitudes, without wondering if they even care that our God incarnate walked the earth, without knowing whether they even believe that the Christ was sacrificed for human sins... that's a problem.

Many a so-called Christian group out there is either Christian but dragging a Marley-chain of blatant error behind them, or not Christian at all.

You'll never find the "perfect" church; if you could, it wouldn't be "perfect" any more, as soon as fallible human beings joined it... but that's no reason to stop looking for one the Lord can work with.  Check out the positive things Jesus had to say re: the seven churches of Asia in the Revelation.  They were His, even with problems, but the concept exists that at least some of them weren't gonna be His forever if they didn't shape up.
