Anybody want to find out the time of the day when our Savior ascended? It’s here in Psalm 110, specifically in the LXX. I thoroughly rejoice in this whole resurrection Psalm, so here it is in full, interspersed with commentary for those with patience and the time to read it at leisure this Easter weekend.
(Ps.110:1) “The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
This was God telling Jesus to be seated as a crowned high priest king on the throne of His father David after His ascension on resurrection day, according to the Apostle Peter’s teaching on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:32-36).
The “footstool” reference was reminiscent of Jerusalem’s Temple with its altar of incense, which was called God’s “footstool” under the Old Covenant - a place of established communication between God and man (Ps. 132:7, I Chron. 28:2, Lam. 2:1). Under the New Covenant, that physical, fixed location of inter-communication between God and mankind went entirely mobile with the Spirit’s in-dwelling presence. This rendered EVERY nation in all the world to be blessed as an accessible “footstool” location of communication, available to the ever-increasing numbers of all God’s former enemies who would be seeking Him in repentance.
(Ps 110:2) “The Lord shall send out a rod of power for thee out of Sion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.”
This “rod of power” is the unbreakable shepherd’s rod made of iron, found in Rev. 2:27 and Ps.2:9. It was a rod that was given to the risen Christ on the occasion of His resurrection-day ascension, when God had made Him “both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36).
Christ’s rule as the ultimate, unchangeable high priest on His throne of the mercy-seat in heaven was fully established, regardless of the existence of those who were still acting as His enemies. With the overcoming saints acting as Christ’s ambassadors, and the Holy Spirit residing within them, then regardless of whatever nation they would be occupying, there in that place would be the established presence and rule of Christ, bodily present and ruling in the midst of Christ’s enemies within that nation (Rev.2:26-27).
(Ps.110:3) “With thee is dominion in the day of thy power, in the splendours of thy saints: I HAVE BEGOTTEN THEE FROM THE WOMB BEFORE THE MORNING.”
Here we have the specific description of Christ’s resurrection - and the powerful display of His dominion over death by raising the Matthew 27:52-53 saints along with Himself.
Christ testified that no man took His life away from Him, but instead, He laid it down by Himself. He had “power to lay it down”, as well as the “power to take it again” (John 10:18). According to Romans 1:4, Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection of the dead.” In other words, that “resurrection of the dead” was when Jesus raised those Matthew 27:52-53 dead saints along with Himself as the group of “First-fruits”, thereby giving a declaration of His power and dominion over death.
This verse also gives an exact definition of what God meant by having Jesus “BEGOTTEN” by Him. Ps. 110:3 is NOT discussing Christ’s physical birth when He became incarnate through Mary. It is describing the day when Christ became the very first one to stand before God’s presence in heaven in a glorified, flesh-and-bones body.
Not even Enoch or Elijah could say this; nor Lazarus, nor Dorcas, nor Jairus’ daughter, nor the widow’s son, nor those raised by Elijah and Elisha, nor those raised by the disciples, nor the Matthew 27:52-53 resurrected saints. According to John 3:13, NONE of these had ever ascended to heaven yet in their glorified, resurrected bodies before Christ “opened the matrix” as the “First-born”, and made the entrance to heaven possible by His ascension to the Father in heaven on His resurrection day. The title of the “FIRST-begotten” belongs forever and always to Christ alone, although the “First-fruits” (plural) title belongs to both Christ and the Matthew 27:52-53 saints raised along with Him.
This resurrection of Jesus in Ps. 110:3 was symbolically compared to a “birth process” by God having “begotten Him from the womb” at a time that was “BEFORE THE MORNING”. This is not just wasted information. We are told that “WHEN IT WAS YET DARK” (John 20:1), Mary made her way to the sepulcher. Seeing the stone rolled back, she ran to tell Peter and Lazarus (the beloved disciple). Running back with them, she remained weeping at the sepulcher once they had left. This is when she saw the two messengers in white, and then Jesus Himself. He then told her not to touch Him, because He had not yet ascended to the Father. Her mission was to tell the disciples that “I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God, and your God”, which He did as soon as she had left (John 20:17).
This before-dawn ascension was the time, (while it was yet dark), when God said “I have begotten thee from the womb BEFORE the morning.” This “FIRST RESURRECTION” was the time when the Son of Man became the “First-born”, “First-begotten”, “First-fruits from the dead” who was “brought near before the Ancient of Days” in the clouds of heaven (Daniel 7:13-14). At that time, He was given dominion, glory, and a single, indestructible kingdom (with the crown of a high priest, after the order of Melchizedek). It was just as He told the disciples in Matthew 28:18 before His final ascension, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth...”
(Ps. 110:4) “The Lord sware , and will not repent, Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
This sworn promise from God to Christ was given when Jesus was installed as our great high priest in heaven, whose high priesthood would never pass to another, just as Melchizedek’s priesthood was a deathless one with “the power of an endless life”. (Hebrews 7:15-17). This assures us that Christ’s glorified, resurrected body of flesh and bones that “passed into the heavens” was never dissolved or gotten rid of. He “EVER LIVETH to make intercession for us” in that glorified, human/divine form (Heb. 7:25).
(Ps.110:5-6) “The Lord at thy right hand” (the ascended, enthroned Jesus) “has dashed in pieces kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the nations, he shall fill up the number of corpses, he shall crush the heads of many on the earth.”
This is almost a duplicate of Psalm 2, which was also dedicated to Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension. It also gave a threat against the earth’s kings and judges who conspired together to put Christ to death. If these “kings and judges” of Israel who had conspired to crucify Christ did not yield fear and submission to the Son, they would perish under the wrath of that Son.
A returning Christ did indeed “speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure.” The high priesthood “kings and judges” of the land of Israel that remained antagonistic to the faith were targeted for destruction during the AD 70 era. Isaiah 24:21-23 prophesied long before that God would imprison these “kings of the earth” in Jerusalem as prisoners in a pit, and after many days, they would be “found wanting” - meaning they would be GONE.
The Rev. 19 white horse Rider, who in righteousness would judge and make war, would stain His robes red with the blood of these kings and rulers as He took vengeance on that first-century generation’s willful rejection of His sacrifice. He would accomplish this by “crushing the heads of many on the earth” in the land of Israel in those days.
(Ps. 110:7) “He shall drink of the brook in the way; therefore shall he lift up the head.”
The conquering Word of God warrior on the white horse that would “tread the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” would summon a gathering of birds to eat the corpses of high priest kings, captains, mighty men, horses, and the armies that rode them in battle. After this carnage, the victorious Word of God warrior, with blood from the “wine press” of AD 70 Jerusalem staining all His raiment, would refresh Himself by drinking from the (Kidron) brook in the way.
At this point in time, the Word of God white horse rider was wearing “MANY CROWNS” - not just the single crown of His high priesthood given to Him on the day He was “Begotten” of the Father at His first ascension on resurrection day.
These “many crowns” were confiscated from a destroyed Satan who had once been given “all the kingdoms of this world” (Luke 4:5-6). The victorious Christ would claim all the forfeited crowns of these kingdoms for Himself, and vicariously through Him the saints now “possess the kingdom”, and “rule the nations” without the existence of any Satanic or demonic intervention.
Thanks to Christ’s conquering work on our behalf, “we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.”
