If Jesus came over for supper one night...
« on: Wed Jun 26, 2002 - 05:47:12 »
Some good answers have been given, I like the idea He is already a welcome guest. I also think of the times he came over for dinner, say in Luke 7 and Luke 14. Seems as if He upset some folks rather seriously:

Those not open to receiving folks who were struggling with a sinful life.

Those who wanted the chief seats and recognition more than anything else.

Those who only practiced hospitality for what they could get out of it.

I would hope to be a Mary at that dinner.

Well, after Jesus had told me to stop worrying about my messy house, and to spend some time with him, we would sit on the front porch swing and sip lemonade.  He would put his arm around me and keep making the swing go higher and higher until I was afraid it would break. By this time we would be laughing so hard that I would spill my lemonade.  I would try to ask him a question...about life...why it can be so hard sometimes. He would just hug me and say, "Let's swing instead." Just sitting in the swing with his arm securely around me, I would know that it did not matter how hard life is, my protector and my best friend is right beside me.

none of us could do it accurately.  the boards are not measuring instruments.  the best you could get would be your assumption based upon what people think they are saying.

Good mind-refreshing question, because, you see, He IS here for supper every night.  He's looking over my shoulder right now.

Here the way you mean it, though...?

I'd borrow a video camera right quick.  I'd give Him whatever I had to eat that evening.  I'd call the neighbors and the church and whoever else I could get ahold of, depending on if He were ready for a crowd or not.  (If not, that's what the camera is for!)

Various questions about ticklish passages in Scripture would rush out of my head, I wouldn't even recall them; that's how important they are in the face of the Christ.

I'd just make sure my family sat & listened to Him, and I'd pull the perfectly balanced Mary/Martha while bustling around & serving folks.  My kitchen/dining area is open to the living room/seating area, so I'd miss nothing.

I'd really long to crawl up into His lap, but I'd be happy to sit at His feet.

That gentle rebuke Jesus gave Martha for her attitude towards Mary says it all...  Mary had chosen the better part.

But, also, there are the hosts/hostesses who would see the beautifully prepared food as if it were an offering; a sacrifice of time/talent/resources, an anointing and a washing of His feet...

Can you imagine how it would feel to be able to refresh and nourish God?!?

But after the important spiritual questions,I would spend a lot of time about the creation, early man, dinosaurs.

You do spend quite the time thinking about a "Dead" man. Could it be that he's not really that "Dead" after all? Could it be that the "Dead" man has laid a burden on your heart that you just keep trying and trying to shed?

You know the "Dead" man loves you. So do I.

That's really not that hard to accept once you relax.

Good point Janine.  I was thinking the same thing.  Since He is with us all the time we should really live like it and tell everyone about Him.  The reality of His presence really should change the way we do things.
The idea of wondering why He would hang out with the likes of us is a good one.  I wonder if the unsaved feel that way as well.  We and they need to know it is more about Who He is than who we are and that it is because of Jesus and what He has done that we can be with Him at all.
Good topic starter BH.  What would you say to Him?

I think part of a popular song would probably describe my feelings as I'm just not sure how I would react!

From :  "I Can Only Imagine" by Bart Millard and MERCY ME
.........
I can only imagine what my eyes will see
when your face is before me
I can only imagine, I can only imagine
Surrounded by your glory
what will my heart feel,
will I dance for you Jesus
or in awe of you be still,
will I stand in your presence
or to my knees will fall,
will I sing halleluja's
or be able to speak at all
I can only imagine, I can only imagine.

Lad, He is not only here for breakfast and dinner as well as supper every day, He has a cup of tea with me each morining when I go out to feed the birds.

The question is, what do you do each time He stands at your door and knocks? You know He's there because you are here. You have been hearing Him knocking for some time now.  But lad you won't find Him here on this web site nor any other. Not in the way you are looking.

You will not be able to put your hands in the wounds, but lad the moment you can sincerely bring yourself to say, "My Lord", you will fall to your knees in adoration as Thomas did. I know it takes a lot of courage to take that small step. We all do.

But lad, I can tell you from personal witness that it is certainly worth it.

You said this in a reply to our dear Em. I just wonder how can you sit and judge the level or degree of sincerity of the faith of the people at this board??? I think maybe you're not much the "real, sincere athiest". I think maybe you're here because you want to believe but have somehow been convinced not to by your bad experiences with "religion" and "religious" people. Don't blame Jesus for it/them.  If you are sincere in your quest for truth you will come to welcome the Lord Jesus into your life. Keep seeking ... you may think you're not searching for Him, but really you are, B.H., and He can work through serendipity as well as any other means. You have a lot of people praying for you, not just the three who win your "real, sincere faith" trophy.  :D

Since I am convinced that the Risen Lord is always present with his People as they break bread I believe I have already eaten with him.  Luke 24 says that it is in "the breaking of the bread" that he was revealed -- I pray for eyes that see.

In the Eschaton perhaps the best I could do is to follow the example of the beloved disciple and simply lean on Jesus.  What a comforting place to be.

BH, because, being God, he would know that it was not really the answer to my question that I desired, but rather the assurance of his love and the comfort from my own hurts that only he could give. In talking with Jesus, he would realize, that like the woman of Samaria, I did not need to focus on the world's problems so much as I needed to face my own insecurities and come to peace with my God.

Emily, your relpy is the same as my thoughts when I read your previous post and B.H.'s question.  If Jesus were here for supper (and He is) we really wouldn't need to ask many of those questions because suddenly they wouldn't make any difference.  We just need to get our focus right as you have suggested.

Seems to me that your relationship with the Lord is really growing.  Thanks for the help.

Considering the fact he is dead I doubt that would happen.  However, if he walked into my house I would ask him to leave and not come back.  If he invited me I would turn him down citing that if I was to choke he might find it in his "infinite" wisdom to let me suffocate to death.

We stayed unashamedly indoors.  I "barbequed" in the oven.  Even when the family all went to the "Freedom Festival",  a non-alcoholic, family-oriented celebration of the 4th, in the evening, I stayed home.  I might've enjoyed the fireworks... I definitely would've enjoyed the almost 100% worship-and-gospel musical entertainment... but I was thrilled to purr in the air-conditioning and not sweat.

Does anyone "doctor" their baked beans?  I don't mind using a decent canned bean to start, Bush's brand perhaps; but I like to add chopped onion, green & red bell peppers, crumbled bacon, crunchy fried onions on top... and more onions and peppers and bacon.  And maybe some molasses.  Then I top it with crunchy light-brown turbinado sugar.

I wonder why I never seriously considered the menu for a visit from Jesus?  Would I poke through Scripture & end up cooking Him what amounts to a Passover meal, with side dishes of honeycomb & grilled fish?

Or would I serve Him whatever I had, counting on Him to find something He'd like in the midst of the buffet, by His graciousness?
