Losing Religion to find Salvation !
« on: Tue Jul 20, 2021 - 17:53:54 »
The  story is told about a man that fell into a  pit and couldn't get him self out .

A philosopher came along and reasoned with him why there are pits in our world .

A psychologist came by and researched the  procedures by which he landed in the pit and tried to help to accept his pit .

A religious man came by and told him to keep trying to pull himself up by his bootstraps to keep working at getting out of the pit .

A Scientist  came  along and said , you think you are in a pit .

A televangelist came by and promised to raise  50  million dollars to minister to his needs and told him that his lack of  faith led him to be in that pit .

A politician came by and  volunteered to start a  National Pit  Elimination Program .

A county inspector said , " Did you have a permit for that pit ?

An  optimist said  " Things could be  worse "

A pessimist claimed ,  " Things are going to get worse .

But then  Jesus  Christ came and He lifted him out of his  pit .

Outside of Christ , each of us are in a pit we can not get ourselves out of , a  Pit of  sin , of  death , condemnation , and  Judgment .

We are without  strength and unable to save ourselves and we each need a  savior .

Religion never saved anyone ,  Only Christ  saves .

We need, to lose  religion to find salvation , because the only way any one is saved from

all their sins is by trusting the perfect provision made for our SINS  at the Cross .

Saved by Rom 10:9 and Paul is the  PATTERN  for salvation , 1 Tim 1:16 .

I submit you are using a non-biblical definition of "religion."

James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

                                                                                                                          Religion~Noah Webster 1828

RELIGION, noun relij'on. [Latin religio, from religo, to bind anew; re and ligo, to bind. This word seems originally to have signified an oath or vow to the gods, or the obligation of such an oath or vow, which was held very sacred by the Romans.]

1. religion in its most comprehensive sense, includes a belief in the being and perfections of God, in the revelation of his will to man, in man's obligation to obey his commands, in a state of reward and punishment, and in man's accountableness to God; and also true godliness or piety of life, with the practice of all moral duties. It therefore comprehends theology, as a system of doctrines or principles, as well as practical piety; for the practice of moral duties without a belief in a divine lawgiver, and without reference to his will or commands, is not religion

2. religion as distinct from theology, is godliness or real piety in practice, consisting in the performance of all known duties to God and our fellow men, in obedience to divine command, or from love to God and his law. James 1:26.

3. religion as distinct from virtue, or morality, consists in the performance of the duties we owe directly to God, from a principle of obedience to his will. Hence we often speak of religion and virtue, as different branches of one system, or the duties of the first and second tables of the law.

Let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion

4. Any system of faith and worship. In this sense, religion comprehends the belief and worship of pagans and Mohammedans, as well as of christians; any religion consisting in the belief of a superior power or powers governing the world, and in the worship of such power or powers. Thus we speak of the religion of the Turks, of the Hindoos, of the Indians, etc. as well as of the christian religion We speak of false religion as well as of true religion

5. The rites of religion; in the plural.

This being said, there is only one pure and true religion that of JESUS CHRIST
Quote from: Paul
1st Timothy 6:14-16~"That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen."
The OP say nothing in the way the scriptures teaches the religion of Jesus Christ delivers man from his sins.
Quote from: Paul
Romans 3:21-24~"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:"
All who have knowledge of the pure and true religion of Jesus Christ said AMEN and AMEN.

I only quoted Noah Webster's definition to show the word religion can be applied to heathens as well as to the religion of Jesus Christ. I think it is very clear who I trust.  Every man must ask himself that question and then answer it with the scriptures, just as I did~I said clearly:

Why did you ask when the answer is right before your nose.  ::smile::

By using a worldly definition of the word.  Many (i suspect including the OP) use that definition and disregard what James said. Those people would have a severe problem with your phrase "the religion of Jesus Christ."

And if you notice, the def you cited was actually #4 on the list; meaning there are 3 other definitions more commonly used.

The problem with dictionaries is that they only tell you how words are used around the time and place where the dictionary was written.

This makes dictionaries a very poor resource for understanding the Bible, because most translations of the Bible were produced 100-500 years ago, and probably in a different country.  They are more likely to cause confusion than resolve it.

Dave, you need to think about what you are saying~even the apostle James said:
Quote
James 1:26,27~"If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."
Which agrees with Wester's definition of the word religious/religion.

Webster's dictionary was written to provide the AMERICAN people meaning of the words that they were speaking, nothing more. So, when someone used the word religion, they would have a very comprehensive understanding of its meaning. I find Webster's 1828 edition of the American language very helpful in knowing the "common" meaning of the words I'm reading. Nevertheless, I also know that God's word is its own dictionary so when I see a conflict with the word of God and the common meaning of a word, I go with the scriptures, yet in this case, there's nothing hidden in the word religion and Noah Webster's dictionary and the word of God are in agreement.
