I was asked the other day how one would put on Christ. I have thought this over a spell and thought it would be good to hear other thoughts on this matter. If you could offer up thoughts on just how one should answer this please do so as I need to give this poor soul an answer.

Wherefore THE LAW was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ,

that we might be justified by THE faith. Gal 3:24

But after that (THE) faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster (THE LAW). Gal 3:25

WHAT? FOR ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26
HOW?     FOR as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27

       G1746 enduō en-doo'-o From G1722 and G1416 (in the senese of sinking into a garment);
       to invest with clothing (literally or figuratively):—array, clothe (with), endue, have (put) on.

ABRAHAM was justified BY faith each and every time he OBEYED whatever he was asked to do.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:28

Those who RECEIVE the promise do what caused God to MAKE the promise.
And if ye be Christs, then are ye Abrahams seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal 3:29

That probably happens as in Romans 6 where we are baptized into Christ and then free from sin. However, we have reckon ourselves that way:

Rom. 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand:
      let us therefore cast off the works of darkness,
      and let us put on the armour of light

Rom. 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day;
       not in rioting and drunkenness,
       not in chambering and wantonness,
       not in strife and envying.

Rom. 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ,
       and make not provision for the flesh,
       to fulfil the lusts thereof

2Cor. 6:7 By the word of truth, by the power of God,
      by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

Eph. 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God,
     that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Eph. 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
        but against principalities, against powers,
        against the rulers of the darkness of this world,
        against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Pale (g3823) pal'-ay; from pallo, (to vibrate; another form for 906); wrestling: - / wrestle

Pallô, poise, sway a missile before it is thrown, sway, brandish, she drove it furiously, tripped on the shield-rim, quiver, leap, esp. in fear, II. Pass., swing, dash oneself, Pi.N.5.21; vibrate, of strings, Pl.Phd.94c (psalloito ap. Stob.);  leap, bound, quiver, quake, phrena deimati pallôn
.

Eph. 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God,
        that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Eph. 6:14 Stand therefore,
        having your loins girt about with truth,
        and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Eph. 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Eph. 6:16 Above all,
        taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Eph. 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation,
        and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Couple views....I think Scripture says we "put on Christ" in baptism. However, I don't know that I want to open that can of worms again.

So, to the second: we put on Christ by submitting to God and letting Him transform us. The evidence of having put on Christ is living like Jesus and evidencing the fruit of the Spirit.

Romans 13:12-14
12  The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Galatians 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. To all Christians this is accomplished.

Ephesians 4:24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Colossians 3:12  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Colossians 3:14  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Well...Someone can "put on" Christ...but it won't do them any good at all. There are those that simply want to join the "Christian Club" by acting like the rest of us without ever having the heart change that it requires...They want the appearance of being a good, moral person....but really don't want God in their lives...it would get in the way of their desires and plans.

Sure someone can put on an external showing of a God centered life...but that doesn't mean that they have an internal, heart felt relationship with God.

They musta had either a freudian slip or gaff...or they were sincere in that...

To me it would be something troubling that they said...but I would keep quiet and move on.

Bill,

Have you noticed Peterson's translation of Rom. 13?

Quote
But make sure that you don't get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can't afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don't loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!

Looks to me that "putting on Christ" has a lot to do with our attitude and perspective about what's important and how that affects the way we live.

Also helpful;

Eph. 4:20-24
Quote
But that's no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It's rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.

and Col. 3:9-14
Quote
Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire. Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ.

So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

I hope that helps.

As HRoberson said,  Scripture says we "put on Christ" in baptism. (Gal 3:27)

Best to go with what scripture says. (not sure I'd say reading scripture is opening a bag of worms)

That is the HOW of it.

Lets start here and it would require the person to read Jesus words from Genesis to Revelation

For the new born christians

Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge?   and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?  them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

10: For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

11: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

12: To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

13: But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

once the person has the word of God they have to keep it on with these instructions!!!

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

13: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14:stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,

Just how would one put Christ on in baptism?

If we truly love God, then we will obey "Every word" that proceeds out of his mouth (Matthew 4:4). Baptism is one of those words. In order to be baptized, certain events must take place: You must give up a lifestyle where sin has dominion, (ruler ship) over you. Sin according to 1 John 3:4, is the transgression (breaking) of the law. You must be taught "The Word", before you can adhere to God's commandments (judgments\statues). These laws are found in the Holy Bible; beginning with Genesis and ending with Revelation. You must believe what the bible says and finally, you must confess that Jesus is Lord. Once this has been accomplished, you are qualified to be baptized in the name of Jesus (Acts 2:38).

I agree with HRoberson and Stilts.

How does one put on Christ in baptism?  By being immersed...having faith in the power of God (Colossians 2:12).
