Almost everyone knows that the gospel of Christ is light as He is light to the world. A new twist on this accepted phrase is "the light gospel". It's not the same thing.
This aberration of God's message to SINNERS is meant to soften the cutting edge of conviction that leads to repentance and salvation. It is meant to redirect and confuse the listener or reader and persuade them that their SIN isn't SIN at all.
Very little can be gleaned from internet searches on the subject of "the light gospel". Most search results yield links to publishers of Biblical study material or faith statements of American churches. As a result this doctrine of demons has slowly and consistently crept into the sermons and studies of several churches.
For instance, I recently visited two churches each of which was several hundred miles from the other.
In one, the preacher of the "light gospel" acknowledged that the foundation of the doctrine is a total lack of REPENTANCE and a rejection of RIGHTEOUSNESS as professed by scripture. When I attempted to mention the efficacy and history of repentance and the righteousness it led to, the preacher rejected the idea completely.
Around the second church, the property was festooned with colored flags proudly commemorating a departure from the gospel and traditional social relationships. When I inquired where their Sunday school classes were held I was told that interested members of the church assembled in the bar across the street for instruction and encouragement.
Both churches were franchise members of a major American Christian denomination.
I admit that my knowledge of the widespread acceptance of "the light gospel" is limited. I don't know how many churches now accept this doctrine of demons. Do you know, dear reader? Please share your experience and perceptions with the rest of us here.
Passive indifference is the same as active malice.
When it's directed at friends and family a break in the relationship results. When it's directed at God, what might we expect His response to be? (*)
that's me, hollering from the choir loft...
(*) You do not support the root, but the root supports you. - Romans 11:18b
This gospel lite has been around for centuries, in my view. In scriptures it was first preached by the prince of this world.
Gen. 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, "Ye shall not surely die":
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, (Transgress the Commandment) then your eyes shall be opened
, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
This teaching of separating God's instruction from God's Salvation is the temptation we need to resist. And now that we have a New Priesthood (Covenant), we don't have to go find "another voice" to preach salvation to us. We now have the Oracles of God in our own homes, own hands and in our own mind, just as God promised in the New covenant. All we need is belief.
Great post CL, and one that should be discussed. But one that ultimately exposes the religious businesses of our time, much in the way Jesus exposed the mainstream religions of the world HE was born into.
