Our church uses good ol' Matzo bread and has for a long, well guess since its been there. We get low on Matzo now and then and someone has to go to the store. We always have plain unsalted, but if I get called to go on a 'matzo run' I have other choices:

   Saltine Matzo
   Thin Salted Matzo
   Thin Tea Matzo
   Whole Wheat Matzo
   Spelt Matzo
   Egg & Onion Matzo
   Everything Matzo
   Egg Matzo
   Yolk Free Egg Matzo

Would it be OK to choose from the above variety, or would this be adding to the word of God?

"authorized"?

Get your hands on a copy of the DVD put out by Jews for Jesus, "Christ In the Passover".  Then come back and ask that question again.

Personally, I don't think it matters.  Jewish tradition meant nothing to the Gentiles, so I don't know that they would have gotten all tangled up over leavened or unleavened, juice or wine, red grape or white grape or purple grape, grape or watermelon.  The point is to remember and to share.

I have in common a spiritual bond with believers in the Lord Jesus, who are gathered out of both Judaism and the nations, and, as 'all one in Christ Jesus', we break bread 'till He come' (1 Cor. 11). The idea of feeling a supposed bond with both professing Christians and those who are not, because of the ingredients of the bread symbol, does not occur to me.

John 3.16 contains great theology.

Read God's Word prayerfully every day.

Try vacationing in the South: plenty of sun, and some great churches down there!

(And if folks feel they must have tattoos, have you considered having them in faith related designs?)

If selected to go on a matzo run, you should buy what the others expect you to buy.

It's called being considerate.

Our congregation doesn't use the Matzo, we bake our own. It's a simple recipe of oil and flower.

Do like the Unitarians and use Wheat Thins and Perrier water. For special occiassions they put some baked brie on the Wheat Thins.

Jewish people only use matzo for the Seder which is a religious dinner only for one holiday annually.  That
holiday is passover, other wise known as Pesach.  ( of course if we wish we may eat it any other time ).
I 'd like to know where in the new testament that it says what kind of bread must be served at communion.
I'm still new enough that a natural curiosity yet remains and I like to learn stuff.  Thanks.

The churches of Christ have traditionally based their worship practices on Command, Example and Necessary Inference (although many of us here don't go along with that anymore). From that point of view, Jesus and the 12 using Passover matzo would be the example for us to follow. That makes sense for Jewish Christians who can transfer some of the meaning of the Passover to Jesus, the slain lamb of God, but Gentiles don't have that connection. A discussion on what kind of bread to use could easily go the same way as discussions on AC and IM - "scripture doesn't say we can use Wonder Bread" vs "Scripture doesn't say we can't use Wonder Bread." My wife's former Baptist church would use a raised loaf of bread for some special occasion Lord's Suppers (such as New Years eve) and I always wanted to ask the preacher why they did that but I never got around to it.

In answer to Walker's question, I don't think there is any place in scripture that tells us what kind of bread to use. It comes down to do we want to use the bread the first century Christians used or do we want to use bread that is culturally significant to us today? If the latter, we might use Wonder Bread, the French might use baguettes and Bulgarian peasants might use coarse dark rye bread.

For those who would like a little variety in their Eucharist, here is a reminder that unleavened bread has never been used by many Orthodox churches, who call it "dead bread."

Their strongest argument concerning this is that the noun used for the Lord's Supper in the NT, artos, refers everywhere else to leavened bread. [This mirrors the argument made by grape-juice-imbibers that the word for (alcoholic) wine, oinos, is never used in reference to the Lord's Supper.]

Personally I think there is a certain symbolism preserved in representing our Lord's body with matzo: without leaven (sin), pierced, broken, and hidden and uncovered in the Seder traditions...

However, Scripturally, I would have to be somewhat ambivalent. I don't know, what do you think?
