My Diet
« on: Wed Jun 05, 2019 - 00:56:52 »
Well over the past few years I have been really over weight. A bit over 300 pounds at 5” foot 8 1/2”. I used to be 5' foot 9 1/2”. Somehow at 47 I already lost one inch of height. I think like a man that we may be more conscious about our height wanting to be taller and not feel short in the much taller generation of people these days. . well I have to live with it. I wish I was 6'2” or so.

But I am actually writing about my weight. I was eating for years food not so healthy. Hungry man dinners, hot pockets, frozen burritos, frozen pot pies, salty Campbell soups over 900mg of salt, plus plenty of pasta, side dishes like pasta roni, and also plenty of sandwiches.

I finally got close to 360lbs. Well actually 358 my highest weigh in. I can feel the weight upon my legs when I stand or walk. I had to even buy special insoles for my slipper moccasins I always wear in the house. . Well the insoles helped a lot at least.

Now I have been on a new diet. Well not new as a new idea. Many people have done this kind of diet quite often. In fact it is a popular diet idea.

Mostly it is a low carb and lower calorie diet combined. . Now I only eat breads when I have to. Pasta is now less often. I don't always have any of the pasta roni side dishes. I'll have a can low salt vegetable instead. At least a couple a day. Until I have taste for some pasta side dish. .
The one who is at home with me she cuts down our meat portions each meal a little bit. .

Can you believe it? Since I was growing up. On tv I was told eat the four basic groups. Then to balance it all out. See what I mean? Not a big secret. When you go to diet it's not about starving. But yet about eating better making better food choices.

So far I lost 10lbs. . I know if I stay consistent I will keep gradually losing weight. No special pills or powders for me . . I kind of call this the Noah's diet. Part fruits and vegetables. Plus as Noah and his family was allowed now to eat meat of the animals. . Except unclean ones told by Moses. .

So over 3000 years ago in the book of Genesis was the best way to eat. Now I realize the more I eat those fruits, vegetables and some meat in the days of Noah that you can't beat what God already made from the beginning. That is “natural foods”. . Could God ever be wrong? I say that will never ever happen in any life time.

Well still we are not perfect. I still have some candy and chips here and there. But not as much. . We last order pizza sometimes and today was an exception to do so. She was tired from her doctors appt.. They were really twisting her legs in these tests. .

She asked pizza tonight. I said fine. But something healthy tomorrow. Tomorrow will be having her tasty chili. . The kidney beans I think belong to the vegetable group. At least I know kidney beans are healthy. We also eat lower fat ground beef and also turkey ground sometimes. .

I am still heavy. But  will tell you. When you lose 10lbs + it's really makes a big difference how you feel on your feet. . The lighter you get the better you can move around. Especially if you ever got this heavy as I have done. .

I recommend low carb / low calorie and also lower salt diets to others to try . .

Also try to walk when you can or any kind of things that make you active in some way. Do some house chores too.

Well you don't have to do this one. But if you want to share your diet write here after me what your diet is about. I would be interested to hear.

Since the middle of September I have been doing the Ketogenic diet. I have lost over 50 pounds in seven months, and then for the last month and a half I have been pretty much off of it, adding a bit more snacks and sweets to my eating. I just cut down on the carbs and the calories and increased the healthy fats, keeping the protein at moderate levels. In addition, I made changes to my morning workouts to more effective strength and cardio training, six mornings a week. It makes a difference.

Even though I got off the strictness of the Keto for the last 6 or 7 weeks, I haven't yet gained back any of the weight. I say, "Yet."  ::noworries::

I am determined to get back on soon, within the next few weeks. I have medical stuff to get through and then hopefully I can get back on the wagon and lose about 30 more pounds to get to my target weight, maybe get it down by the next mid-September. Imagine that, 80 pounds in a year.

I hope my sharing this will be an encouragement to you to stay consistent and not give up. You can do it. ::clappingoverhead::

Congrats to both of you and thank you for sharing your health journeys and tips!

I'm also doing keto, low-salt. I fell off the wagon during the holidays, but I'm definitely back on.

Last night, I pan fried a lovely piece of cod in coconut oil and butter, and added a big dollop of my homemade tarter sauce. I also stir fried some shredded cabbage in the pan drippings to have with it. It was so tasty that I plan on making it again tonight!  ::yummy::

mommydi, you’re making me drool.  I’ll have to try that combination...sounds delectable.  I’m also on the Keto type diet with moderate salt, combined with the intermittent fasting.  I usually QUIT eating (except for a couple cups of decaf) from 5:00 in the evening until noon the next day.  With my lower senior metabolism, I have found that I just don’t get hungry in between those times, especially if I have loaded up on food with a generous amount of solid protein and the good fats like butter, cheese, and eggs.  Zucchini and blueberries and all kinds of nuts are great favorites with me these days.

So far over the last year I’ve lost a total of 35 lbs. and the big sized clothes are sagging on me.  Got maybe 25 lbs more to go.  Knee pain from just that bit of extra weight gone has disappeared.  Energy level is great...I’ve no problem keeping up the pace with my spry, younger neighbor in our daily dog-walking together.   And I have enough stamina to be tearing down the drywall and the brick walls of our house by myself to re-use the reclaimed bricks in a home renovation project this summer.  It’s hot, dusty work, but it helps sweat the pounds off.

My son turned me on to the Keto diet with the great results he had with it, and I can see myself living with this system for the long haul.  Sweets are a rare indulgence, but I do permit myself an occasional treat of dark chocolate, my one luxury.

The "4 food groups" are far from correct in this current era. Drop dairy entirely, it is not a food group and there is nothing healthy about it. Loads of fresh vegetables and fruits is where it's at. Combine that with some fresh fish or chicken and you're well on the road to eating healthier.
Completely AVOID the frozen food and canned food sections, in fact completely avoid any and all processed foods, not only are they extremely fattening, they offer very little in terms of nutrition and these days I'm leaning toward the fact that much of our illnesses are a result of poor diet and habitual eating.

3 Resurrections, I'm so happy for you that you're sticking with keto and IF. I'm doing the same with IF. My eating window is 12-5 each day. It wasn't difficult for me to switch to that 12-5 window, which surprised me.

Even though I've been avoiding processed meats, I just tried something I saw on youtube last night. I went to the German market and bought some hot dogs in natural casings (don't read that part Alan) and fried them in butter! (don't read that part, either.) Then I dipped them in some German mustard. Before I saw that video last night, I have never heard of frying hot dogs in butter, but now I'm a fan! Mercy, that was good.
Picked up a rib-eye for dinner.

I love to grill Hebrew National Weiners. Makes the rest seem like bad Spam in comparison. Eat ‘em with sour kraut and/or mustard!

I like that brand, too!

I'm still fascinated by the fried hot dogs. In a way, it reminds me of the fried bologna sandwiches my mom used to make when I was growing up. I don't think she fried the bologna in butter, though. Probably oil or Crisco. I'll have to ask her.

Dairy is awesome.

I think foods can be healthy for some and unhealthy for others based upon genetics.  If your ancestors subsisted off dairy products your body is more likely to be able to process them and do well with them.

I agree that dairy is awesome, aside from drinking milk some of my favorite foods are dairy related but I also think it would be difficult to justify any health benefits from eating cheese, ice cream, heavy cream, sour cream, etc.

Interesting that you bring up genetics/ancestors/diet. I did the DNA thing through 23 and me, then had a more specific test run on the results that reveals what foods I can and cannot tolerate well, and what genetic markers I carry for certain diseases.
It did say my genetic makeup points to ability to digest dairy very well, but also said I don't do well with meat protein other than fish.
Most of my genetic makeup is from north and northwest Europe including Scandinavian and Finnish. I assume that's why I do well with dairy and fish.

Cheese is filling and is good for protein and fat, and other nutrients.  Heavy cream has quite a few nutrients.  Butter is good.  Ice cream is obviously a dessert.  The less processed these items are, the better they are for you.

Depending on the sour cream, it could be good for your biome.  Yogurt is good for biome as well with active cultures.

I lost about 15 pounds in 4 weeks on the Flu Diet.  Not sure whether I should  rofl or ::frown::

Since the flu abated, I've gained back 2 or 3 pounds.

Dairy is awesome.  I'm going to try to increase my milk intake ever since seeing that moronic rant by the deranged Woke-een Phroekish.  Plus, as a bonus, some racist dog at another discussion site informed me that milk is a racist dog whistle.  ::disco::

There is a very interesting book by Gary Taubes titled "Why We Get Fat, and what to do about it".  I think anyone wanting or trying to loose weight would find it interesting.
