The 2019 Christmas Thread
« on: Tue Dec 03, 2019 - 15:14:23 »
Let's use this thread for anything Christmas, which can include - decor ideas, festivities, recipes, remembrances of Christmases past, traditions, movies/music, church observances, bell ringers, charity ideas, etc.

I will start the thread out with bemoaning the Christmas tree shortage this year. Just got back from shopping for one. Heading back out in about an hour. I did find a gorgeous flocked tree (real) at the fancy nursery that was huge (8 ft diameter) but the price tag said $300, so it didn't come home with me.

They're blaming the Christmas tree shortage on the 2008 recession when a lot of Christmas tree farms went out of business. Who knew the recession would lead to a lack of Christmas trees in 2019.

I bought a fake one that is prelit years ago.  Might not look as nice, but the dogs don't chew it, and it doesn't smell.  It doesn't make messes, etc.

For the first time this year, Mrs. B allowed a fake Christmas tree in her house.   ::clappingoverhead::

Here's the one I wanted that wouldn't begin to fit in my living room!

I ended up with a 7 ft frasier fir instead, but it will be pretty when all is said and done.

I'm with Rella. I'd like to see pics of the Barbarian's tree, and anyone else's tree or decos.

Jaime, I don't remember ever seeing that one.  rofl

Sometimes I put on old 70s and 80s Christmas commercials when I'm decorating or wrapping gifts.

Thank you.   Took us forever to find one she liked, that was reasonably priced.   Given that she has never allowed an artificial tree in the house before, she was giving up a lot.   So I was patient.

I like this tree, too.   Everything is wired so you just connect the three parts, put it in the stand, and plug it in.

When we started, I said; "you know what would be great?   One of those aluminum trees with the rotating colored lights."

My shoulder still hurts.

Well, my little area of the world has only a 7% chance of having a white Christmas this year. Guess that's ok since there are quite a few relatives driving in for Christmas.

Everyone around here must be doing their Christmas shopping at Hobby Lobby. I drove over to Oklahoma City yesterday, and I've never seen so many pup-trailers on the turnpike - all of them sporting the Hobby Lobby logo.

You have no idea.   That's just the living room book wall.   The library is in the Happy Room:

Mrs. B and I both buy too many books.   It's a kind of addiction.   Half-Price Books' annual clearance sale (they rent a convention center hall and fill it with books) is a big day for us.

But for kid who grew up in a small rural community, without a library or bookstore, it's comforting to know that if I don't have anything to do, there's all these old friends to revisit.

Nook or Kindle are great.

Even have some free from Amazon for download, but work with you libraries for free rentals as well as the ability to "buy" and keep books forever.

I have a Kindle.   I use it less than I thought I would.   There's something satisfying about turning pages of a real book.   Don't know what it is, but I like it better.   Kindle is great for air travel, though.

I bought myself a Christmas gift yesterday.  ::blushing::  It's a Chemex coffee maker. This is the smoothest, best tasting cup of coffee I've ever had. I'm tempted to run back to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and buy another one for my parents for Christmas. I have been using a French press ever since my old Proctor Silex percolator bit the dust.
Looking forward to serving Chemex coffee to my Christmas guests!

I bought a Keurig K-mini because I hate coffee and traditional coffee makers take up too much space.  But I need something for when parents are around.

Assuming that's a pour over style coffee maker? I've tried that before and I must admit it's very good but I don't have patience for that in the morning before I go to work. We bought a Ninja last year, it makes regular and specialty coffees but it doesn't actually have a pressure infuser to make Espresso. Looking at a Breville system next.

I looked it up and said~no, that's not for me at the present, maybe when I buy a fifth wheel to travel then I might get one, but now, I'll stick with my Bunn coffee maker that's in my shop: https://www.amazon.com/Bunn-Automatic-Commercial-12950-0213-Stainless/dp/B01BY9UDW0/ref=sr_1_22?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIu9bX54TH5gIVEr7ACh0HfQiHEAAYAiAAEgI63vD_BwE&hvadid=313935835825&hvdev=

Coffee in less than three minutes and then I place it in a thermal to keep it fresh longer.  from Sams Club https://www.amazon.com/VonShef-Dispenser-Stainless-07-177/dp/B00E1KF6C2/ref=asc_df_B00E1KF6C2/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198107422705&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9691751753921007

Alan, yes it's a pour over, and yes it takes time and more effort than a regular coffee pot. The Breville is supposed to be so good. Hope you and the Mrs. get one.
When done right, a dirty chai latte is my absolute favorite.

RB, I've wanted a Bunn coffee maker since I was 16 years old and waitressing at the pancake house. I poured many a cup of hot coffee from their Bunn coffee maker. That's when I started drinking coffee. Actually, since I've wanted a Bunn for decades, I should probably go ahead and buy one.

Due to my doggie's illness and death, I'm behind on Christmas shopping this year. I reluctantly went to the mall and figured it would be a mad house. Wrong. These were made at 9:45 a.m., the Saturday before Christmas at the largest mall in town. Unreal. When I drove home and went past Kohl's, their parking lot was about 1/3 full. Since the economy is so strong, and people are spending money, the empty parking lots are probably due to Amazon? Yesterday I ordered 2 DVDs from Amazon, and they're scheduled to be delivered to my doorstep by evening today. Hard to beat that kind of service.
