Hi,

My favorite car has always been my 1985 Dodge Aries. The engine that kept running after you turned it off, the windows that wouldn't go down all the way, the drooping headliner, the worn shocks and faded paint on the hood and roof were all what attracted me to it. I think I might get me another one in the future.

Bob, I was a missionary but my misson was to help the Maasai plan grazing systems for group ranches.  I think God sent me to Kenya so His missionaries could minister to me.  The missionaries that I met in Kenya help bring me to Jesus.

IMO the old style Land Rovers were much better than the Jeep.  So I can't use banging my head on the roof of the Land Rover as an excuse, although sometimes I would like to.

Peck,

Morris,
I bought a henry j also.I was just too embarrassed to mention it

Brace yourself.  We actually had three of them; two were parts cars.  We did, however, comport ourselves with sufficient class to abstain from leaving the junkers in the front yard.

My favorite cars through the years have been Mustangs, any year basically.

I absolutely was in love with the early 80's Pontiac Trans Am, including the eagle on the hood.  (Tourquoise)!!!

I have always wanted a convertible Chrysler Lebaron.

Of course,  I have never had any of these.  My favorite car that I have owned was a 1987 Pontiac Bonneville, bought new.  Man talk about a nice car.  Tinted windows and awesome lighting on the inside.   It was great.

We ended up trading it later for a stupid Cadillac that talked to us.  The talking and cost of upkeep(way too soon) drove us nuts. I will never own another "talking car".
"You are low on fuel" and whatever else it wouldn't shut up about.

These days it is pretty much mini-vans (which I love)!!

One type of vehicle I will never own is an SUV.  My husband loved them, noticed I said loved.  We were basically conned into renting one on vacation this year.  Ugly and no room and every single time someone moved one of the middle seats to get out, the driver or shot-gun passenger was pitched into the dash.  Every one of us hated that 2002 piece of junk.

Well, I never had this auto, but it's on the top of my list of "wants" in the automotive department. But, it is not a "need":

1956 Thunderbird, Candy Apple Red with the porthole.

Mini Cooper S
Martin Green laquer 42 hand rubbed coats over bronze base with diamond dust, a leather checkered flag roof, kid glove raka seats, dial in supercharger with advance link, spec'd and balanced, polished ports, alloys, cage, soft compounds..........

Or perhaps a nice tame BSA? Norton? One of those Cafe Racers perhaps from Japan?

And a full page ad in the Irish Times to warn the Garda!

Actually today I do rather fancy the Seat Cordoba or the Eclipse 4WD w/turbo.

But Bam Bam the Jeep is what it takes to get around.  LOLOLOL  I could garage me Mini in some of the holes down here!

Bill, what were you doing in Kenya? A missionary? Or is that where your shepherd profession began?

I know after driving a jeep for several thousand miles in the Marine Corps, you won't get me in one again. The blasted top dented my head in by constantly whipping up and down in the wind. (Hey! Maybe that's my problem!)

Speaking of Jeeps, I once had a 1953 (or 50 something) Henry J.  The Henry J was made by Kaiser and most parts, except the body would interchange with a Jeep.

I have only bought two cars new. I figure anything you can drive around the block and depreciate by $2-3,000 (and that's on a modest car) is a lousy buy.  My first new car was a 1968 red Mustang.  In 1999 my family, after several years of trying, convinced me to buy a new car.  I got the 35th anniversary edition Mustang.  In red of course.  The little jewel came with a history book of the mustang and a CD set of pop/rock music from 1964-1999.  Now, here's progress for you.  The '68 was "Candy Apple

You sound like my kind of thinking on cars.My gmc pickup had 265,000 miles before it was wrecked.Planned on putting 100,000 more before the wreck. Some guy came by before the wreck and said that's a mighty nice looking truck, and I said well it's got over 260,000 miles on it.He said well that's nothing,I've got a ford f150 that has over 500,000 miles on it.

This is interesting.

A Karmen Ghia! Did someone say that? My dad had a Karmen Ghia, very early 60s. It was great. He drove it over 60 miles each way to work. It had HUNDREDS of thousands of miles on it. It was a Flintstone car! The passenger seat had this huge hole in the middle of the floorboard. If you looked down for more than 10 seconds you got roadsick. In the winter-time the snow sloshed all over you, and in the rain you were drenched. Impossible to be lady-like in it. The pore ole thing nigh onto rusted right out from underneath him, but he still kept driving it. It finally died and put itself out of its misery. Dad was never the same.

I learned to drive a stick-shift Pontiac Tempest in the mid-60s, a little bigger than a Corvair. Loved that car.

My favorite car was my cousin's 1957 Ford T-Bird, turquoise and white with white leather seats. Could that thing go!

I'll stick to decades in which I had a driver's license...

70's:  My first car was a '72 Chevelle.  HOT car!  Way too much for a teenage boy to be driving, that's for sure.  It's a miracle I didn't kill myself or somebody else.

80's:  Bought a new Dodge Colt in '83.  A come down speed-wise from my Chevelle, but a solid, super dependable car.  170k miles on the first engine, just shy of 200k on the second engine.  It was our family car until our third child was born.  Sold it to a neighbor's kid who drove it 4 more years and then he sold it to somebody else!

Since then it's been "mini van city".  Man, I love woodgrain...

1967 Plymouth Barracuda, sold it in Kenya in 1975 for more than I paid for it new

1973 Land Rover also sold it in Kenya in 1975 for more than I paid for it new

I presently drive a 1998 Ford Contour and a 1999 Ford F150.  I think they are the best vehicles I've owned.

I got my first car in 1953 and have had a number of cars & pickups but those listed above are my favorite.  Sure wish I could have done the same with all like I did the two in Kenya.

1985 Chrysler New Yorker.  Deep cranberry sauce red.  Seductive comfy envelop-you-forever seats.  Quiet ride.  Every electric bell and whistle you could imagine.  Custom pre-set settings for the posture, height, etc. of the seats.  Stereo sound to die for.  Excellent gas mileage.

It spoke to me in a lovely deep baritone voice: "Your fuel is low... The door is ajar... Please turn off the lights... Take your keys... Check your fluid levels... Thank you!"

I hated that nasty Mitsubishi engine, though.  It died, like so many of its ilk.  It ended my love affair with my rolling luxury hotel, my New Yorker :( ...

I now drive (or own, at least, since usually one or two cars are awaiting repair...) three mid-'80's cars, a Ford Escort (paid $500), a Mustang (paid $300), and the jewel (ha) of the bunch, a Mercury Topaz (paid $250).

Not long after buying the Topaz, a guy in a big ol' one-ton dualie rear-ended Mike leaving work one day.

So, since the worthless little car was totalled value-wise, but still perfectly driveable (just uglier), the man's insurance company gave us over $600 for the car.  Plus $500 each for Mike and his father, as a bribe to stop future lawsuits for injuries supposedly sustained in the wreck.  (They were fine.)

So, the family made $1350, and we're still driving the ugly-but-faithful Topaz. :p

Janine,

Well, were they in the side yard?  Or the neighbor's yard?

Actually, when my grandfather got home from WWI, my greatgrandfather set him up in business in an auto repair shop. The building was pretty large, like a small warehouse.  The junkers were out back and sometimes in the basement of the shop.  obtw my family on my father's side were real packrats.  The shop's attic was huge and there and all over parts of the shop there were things amazing to a little kid.  They had never thrown away anything.  There were car parts and antiques everywhere.  I especially liked the brass lamps from a 1914 (15?) Franklin.  In the back room there was a huge turn of the century belt driven lath they had used for turning axels in the early years.  There were some really rare performance parts for a Fronte (have no idea about the spelling) Ford model A.  I was always rummaging and asking my father, "Hey, WHAT is this?".  I swear, one time I found the neck bolts to Frankenstein.

I'm going to tell you what my favorite car ever was, but before I do, I want to tell you why it was my favorite car.  You see I was a loner in high school, not by choice but because I was basically the brunt of every joke.  But for some reason, when I was a freshman, a senior named Dan befriended me.  He took me to church, took me to McDonalds to get a coke, and was willing to hang out with me.  He had a '79 Pacer.  So guess what one of my favorite cars has been since then - a Pacer.  Not so much because I like the car, but because one of the first people to show me grace drove that car.
