: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying
: janine Wed Dec 13, 2006 - 21:33:24
Here are some suggestions for how to get along here...  how to avoid getting upset when people squabble... how to keep your cool when some nut starts spouting gibberish...

If someone is particularly irritating to you, if a particular poster seems to have bile on his cornflakes every morning -- try ignoring him!

If there's a lot of discussion back and forth on a topic, even an important topic, even one revolving around "salvational issues", and the people just simply have the wrong idea and you cannot help them see the light as you have seen it -- after you give it one or two attempts, and they refuse to at least respectfully consider your view -- try ignoring them.

Don't read problem threads, stay off of boards that have topics that irritate you.  Post about matters that matter to you, in the particular sections that you enjoy frequenting, and ignore the rest.

Not every single bit of mental fluff that gets posted here requires your interaction.  You don't have to feel responsible for fixing the problem, fixing the "bad" poster.  It's not your job, and even God Himself can't repair them if they are determined to persist in staying broken.

Good advice. Maybe this should be an addendum to the GCM rules page.
We can call it I Janine 3:16.  ::smile::

Yes Janine.  ::clappingoverhead:: I have tried to say similar things on occasion about simply ignoring posts, but you have said it much better. It really is OK just to keep reading. When we get hot and heavy into debate, especially for me, it seems that the unwritten Law of Posts takes over. "For every post there must be an equal and opposite post."   ::arguing::  Nonsense!

We can even play mind games with ourselves......."If I don't respond to that, did he/she in fact really post?"............You know kinda one of those transcendental things.

It is OK to ignore posts!! A posting vacuum does not have to be filled

And if the irritating poster has said something I consider dangerous -- not a simple disagreement of style or interpretation, but actual "false teaching" --

Well, I can make my answer in a clear and plain way and then go on and ignore him.  Or her.  'Course it's usually him.  Youse guys are so irritating sometimes. Hah.

Then I will have done what I could, and I can hope that sensible people will weigh Mr. Rabid Hobbyist and me, and find my posts much more palatable.  Even if they don't agree with me.  Just because I am so wonderfully loving and reasonable.

Very good advice Janine. I will adhere. I told myself to just stay away from the theology threads, but that is where I am drawn to get more understanding. Maybe admin could fix it so my reply button doesn't work when my blood pressure is higher than my holy spirit level.

ATTENTION< FELLOW GCM-ers:

I propose an upcoming day we will devote to absolute fluffy loving tolerance for just that one day, here on the boards.

I will get with Lee "Admin" Wilson about it.

I will propose Valentine's Day, since that is kinda obviously a day for tender friendship, yes?

And for 24 hours -- from midnite the previous evening thru Feb. 14th all the way to midnite the next nite --

We will post nothing but the most pink-bunny wonderful fluffy luuuuuurve.

If something happens in the media that hurts us and angers us, we can write up our screaming diatribe about it and save it until the next day, OK?

If something TRULY important and negative, God forbid, happens that day -- the Prez gets (God forbid!) assassinated, England (God forbid!) declares war on us, WHATEVER -- and we CANNOT ignore it --

We will even still not do the narsty biting-and-beating posting about it until the next day, y'all hear?  We will note that it happened and we can post a prayer thread about it -- but no bristling blistering commentary about it until after midnite!  Y"all hear?

I really would like to see us pull it off.

It would tickle me no end.

I would especially like us to have threads start where people who usually don't get along at all on the Boards will find SOMETHING positive about their rivals to say.  SOMETHING, y'all hear?

Maybe Mere Nick can tell me he likes my hair or something.  I will immediately follow up with how much I appreciate his desire to see people treated fairly, or something.

See?

Fluffy luuuuuuuurve.

What do you guys think?
: Re: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying

The ONLY way I have found to get along with people is to agree with everything they say and do. Most people don't like for anyone to disagree with them. There are exceptions of course. Some people actually enjoy conflict and a heated argument. Not all arguing can be called a "debate". I debated with a friend once on the differences in our beliefs, but there was never any anger. Too often people can't debate or discuss without anger and name calling. I prefer to stay out of those.

My Dear Sister,
I think that is an excellent thought. I hope you can pull it off. It would be great to see such love shared amongst our brothers and sisters as Christ would do for us.I think you would have to advertise in in all sections though cause some only go to certain areas. But Lord willing his children could for one day achieve this one thing and it would be great for all to share in.

Your Brother in Christ

I had recently considered starting a thread, "What I Like About You," or some such title.  I would start it off by naming a poster and one or two characteristics that I appreciate.  The idea struck me one day when I was away from the computer (probably driving) so I made a mental list of names that I'd start with.  Interestingly, it was very easy to come up with something for those who annoy me the most.  I wasn't really sure which forum to put such a thread in since some people only visit one or two forums.

So what do you think?  Should I go ahead and start the thread, or wait till the fluffy luuuuuve day?
: Re: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying
: msbradley Thu Jan 18, 2007 - 22:06:01
It's nice to think nicely about people. It's nice to know people think nicely of you.
I think it would be nicer if we all just acted like we are supposed to.

How does Jesus expect me to act? What does Jesus expect me to do? What does He expect of me, period? If I keep Him in the center of my world, constantly having Him by my side, how will I act or react to others?

I believe if we were to focus on Jesus with everything we do, there wouldn't need to be such a topic of 10 things I like or hate about you. People are so selfish, so self-centered. Even the ones who think they are so right because they know the Bible so well, they can debate it post after post after post. Knowledge is powerful. Misuse of knowledge is detrimental.

If we choose to love Jesus, if we choose to follow Jesus, how can we be like the lost? I know, we all fall short, we all sin. That's fact, not excuse. We are to strive to be like Him. How can you justify not being even just a little more like Him every single day? Complacency? I don't know.

If Jesus was sitting right next to you as you post, would you really say and feel the same as you do? He is, you know. We wouldn't carry on the way we do. We wouldn't say or type negative things about others because they have different views, interpretations or beliefs than you. You might would consider asking Jesus to help you know what the truth is, to help you open your brother's eyes or heart, to give you guidance in your own understanding, but you wouldn't angrily or nastily post some of the things you do. My Jesus doesn't sit outside my computer room waiting for me to finish saying whatever I want to here.

It's wonderful to feel so passionately about Jesus. But Jesus doesn't want you or even like you to cut down one of His own.

For me to choose to love Jesus, I have to accept He doesn't want me to stay how I am or where I am. He expects me to grow. To be more like Him.

We stumble, but we're not supposed to stay there. We are to get back on the path  He expects us to travel.

Choosing to follow Jesus gives us so much freedom. It gives us joy that non-Christ followers can't even fathom. We learn to live and even be able to survive with humility. Choosing to follow Jesus gives us community. We don't do community too well here.

How about living life passionately for Him? How about loving people, all people relentlessly, just as He loves? How about always putting others before yourself? Hey, I was taught that last one when I was just a young kid.

When we each choose to live as passionately as he lives for us and loves us, we will be well equipped to change other's lives for their eternity.

Grace, what an awesome gift He chose to give us. Why should we take it so selfishly for granted? We are to be like Jesus. If we truly strived for such, you know every single person we came in contact with would be awesomely blown away!

I've recently studied Galatians and am now in Ephesians. It's really getting inside me what we are truly missing when we don't live as "Christ in you" and "you in Christ".

Sorry,I just had to get this out of my heart.

Nevertheless -- I have only one concern about threads like the one you propose == it's similar to the concerns some have about the manna.  Threads like that can degenerate into some sort of sick clique-ridden popularity contest.

What would you do, with style or format or rules or whatever, to make sure it was broad-ranging and wide open?

Like maybe everyone who posts has to first say something they like about the previous poster?  And if you don't know the previous poster very well, you have to research their profile and their posts to get to know them.

Something like that?

: Re: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying
: Nevertheless Fri Jan 19, 2007 - 15:21:20
I really don't know.  That's probably one reason I haven't done it.

I was just kind of down about all the bickering and the bad feelings I've had about people here.  I try to keep those feelings to myself rather than fanning the fire, but the feelings themselves make me unhappy.  I decided instead to think about something positive about the people who were aggravating me, and that helped.

I thought that maybe it would be good to tell people what I appreciate about them, but a thread dedicated to that might seem false.

Just yesterday I read a post by Kalen telling mdd that she appreciated his demeanor on a thread where he was under attack, and that in the midst of disagreeing with him.  That lifted my spirits a great deal, because she was disagreeing without being disagreeable, and her compliment to mdd was true.  Maybe we just need more people setting that kind of example.

Perfect.

Another idea for Valentine's Day... a demand that every single post have a positive bit in it like that.

Still working on that one.  How will we enforce such?

For that one day -- if the positive complimentary loving Christlike comment is not in a post, be the rest of it ever so good and true, then moderators will delete the post!

How about that?

Please report any profanity you found to the moderators, if it hasn't already been dealt with, that is.

We try to keep things clean (within reason), but occasionally something may slip in unnoticed.

By the way, you will hopefully find some people here who are of like mind as yourself.  But, be assured that not everyone here is of like mind.  That's partly what breeds discussion.  If everyone thought the same and agreed on everything, then there wouldn't be much to discuss, and the forum would likely die... just my opinion.  ::tippinghat::

Godchaser, I too, am fairly new here.  I came naively expecting this to be a forum consisting of mainly conservative Christians, as I am.  Some of the discussions I've come across are far from "conservative" and actually are embarrassing for me to even read.  I now try to avoid topics that seem questionable.

There are a lot of people here who are truly desirous of serving the Lord and if you stick around, you will meet them.   ::groupprayer::  Many discussions are wholesome and entertaining, and there are others where you can learn a lot about the Bible if you keep an open mind.

I'm glad you're here, and do hope you will continue to participate.

: Re: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying

"Like Minded" and even "Having the Mind of Christ" does not mean everyone always in constant agreement.

If two people think exactly the same (end-result-wise) and in the same way (process-wise or style-wise), all the time, with no dissension, then having two people is unnecessary.  One of them should go somewhere else and stop taking up all the oxygen.

"Iron sharpening iron" does not arise from total agreement.

And also, remember this, regarding topics or speech patterns or words than seem too rough for you --

You know how a cat usually hates to have its fur rubbed the wrong way?

It's true that it can happen in a mean and irritating way, meant on purpose to bother the cat.

But sometimes -- sometimes!  -- the cat simply needs to turn around!

Whether or not you have a dog in the fight, it IS a tedious and uninteresting topic, when you've slogged through it 43 times in a year.

But, see, it's a very heavy topic, one impacting people's lives in different ways and at different times, and so it will invariably be addressed here and on any other message board where people really think and truly wrestle with stuff.

Probably depends upon the relationship and the word... but you have a good point.

Especially in print.  We have no body language to go by, here.  We have no tone of voice, we have no habitual loving behaviors a friend would always do in between their rough speeches.  So nothing redeems us when we get at cross-purposes with our text-talk.

I doubt it.  They seem well-brainwashed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

As to comment on Janine's "gracious" remark toward Sabbatarians in the above forum, and so to "get along with forum members without even trying" I will assume that you (Janine) meant that we (our brains--the Sabbatarians that is) "are spiritually washed by the word of God".

Eph 5:26  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27  That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

Heb 10:22  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Tit 3:5  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

I hope that we can all continue to share the grace of God freely in this forum.

With love to all my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus...
Shoshanarose

Dear Janine and Saved:

As a sabbatarian, I worship God everyday; I can go to a Sunday church... that is not a problem for me at all, I honor Him by observing the sabbath  as well...I'm sorry that you don't understand what we are trying to say. It is hard, I know.

I am used to being "bashed" for my faith in Christ by non-believers. I have been a Sabbatarian and have taken much scorn by non-sabbatarian christians and I am not touchy about it. I expect them to not understand any theology; however unorthodox to other christians...

I really am dismayed at the brazen bashing of those who, like me may
express your untraditional ideology, unabashedly
I am not ashamed of my Lord or what He has called to me do, and as Christians we are "salt and light"... ::clappingoverhead::

I don't expect it from others who name themselves as followers of Christ...or  any forum that is named "Grace-centered".  ::frown::

I do understand what you are trying to say.  There is nothing wrong with keeping a Sabbath.  It has many beauties about it.

I simply do not see the same emphases in Scripture that you see, for the commandment, necessity of it, post-Cross.  Sorry.

If "understanding" why you do it means you've dug up your Scriptures and traditions and they seem to you to support the idea, and you do it, and you've told me about it, and I can say, "Mmm-hmmm, yes, I can see that.  Is that how you understand that part?  My, my, that's interesting.  Nice to see someone wanting to increase holiness in this world.  Dedication to God is a beautiful thing" --

But yet I do not agree with all your interpretations, nor your reasoning, and thus I do not change my stance about it... well, then, I do understand.   I see you where you are.  I simply don't see the need to join you.

On the other hand, if "understanding" why you do it is the same as agreeing with you and then doing it myself, then no, I don't understand.

Which one did you mean?
: Re: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying
: DCR Mon Jun 18, 2007 - 07:15:19
From what I've noticed, being "brain-washed" frequently means that someone has simply adopted an ideology or become a part of a group we don't agree with.

The real issue should be the kinds of control tactics any given group employs on its members, if that is the case.
: Re: How To Get Along, Even With Disruptive Posters, Without Even Trying
: janine Mon Jun 18, 2007 - 08:32:47
So far as you could see something like that in a print medium, yeah, that's what it makes me think of.

Even if somebody has "adopted an ideology or become a part of a group" I do agree with, or at least have no disagreement with, the... scent? flavor? feel? is funny, sometimes.

But then I'm sure they think I am sold out adhered to brainwashed etc., to my convictions, too.

This forum works best when people are listening to each other and engaging in real conversations, but occasionally people come here just to show others that they're wrong.  It's easy to get caught up in those kinds of conversations, but they're useless.  Noise.

Unfortunately, people get by with obnoxious behavior by taking on ultra-sensitive demeanors and portraying themselves as the offended party.  I'm not accusing any person of being a troll, but I do want to say that every person who has ever visited this board as a troll has reported others' posts to the moderators.

To be clear, I am not thinking about shoshanarose as I type this.  She didn't seem to come to this board itching for a fight.  But others have, some of whom are pretty active at this moment.

Call me paranoid, but I am getting the feeling that certain people are posting outrageous, antichristian garbage in order to stop a conversation that they do not like.  For example, I don't like Catholicism being "promoted" on the board so I simply post some inflammatory, slanderous remark, knowing that a good citizen with report the post and then the thread will be locked.

Hopefully, the good moderators here have a system in place to stop these kinds of attempts to shut down conversation.

Catholicism shouldn't be promoted on this board either way.

Unfortunately, if someone's nutty enough to be disruptive for the sake of being disruptive, there's not much to do about it to stop a conversation rolling out of control but to lock up the thread, and,  depending on the circumstances, to ban the poster.

If someone's being disruptive simply by virtue of disagreement, that's another matter.

Either way -- make your interactions above reproach.  If you do so, you make yourself impressive to those of us with good sense, even if we disagree with you over some matter of teaching.

(Yes, I include myself among those with good sense.  ::cool::  )

I have occasionally edited a whole thread, to keep it up where people could read it, rather than a) deleting it for idiocy, or b) letting it stand with idiocy on it for posterity.  We cannot do that often, especially with long threads -- who has time?  Too much Real Life out here!

Anyway -- it's a rough science, an art always in development.  If we tightened up these boards with the type of moderation/management some other places practice, to keep a really iron grip on every single post --

If we did that, ravenlorre, considering that the owner of this place is connected to the American Restoration Movement, you might not be allowed membership at all.  Much less a chance to say your piece about Catholicism as a practicing Catholic.

If everyone just did as I do and ignored such people, they would get discouraged and leave. Why stay if they can't get anyone rilled enough to reply to them? Unfortunately, people will always take the bait, and these people know that.

One factor to consider in the mix is how much responsibility do we, as members/posters, and do we, the moderators, have toward the "weaker brethren", when it comes to the effects of purposefully disruptive posters, or even accidentally disruptive ones.

And I'm not using "weaker brethren" in a pejorative way.  You know, there really are silly people who argue about silly stuff and want everyone to kowtow to their preferences, wrapping up their arguments with an appeal to everyone having to be nice to the weaker brother.  I don't mean them.

What I'm getting at here is the real, true factor of some folks being weak, needing protection, deserving some consideration.  As in tender new converts, or as in people who've been terribly hurt in life and who then are tender for a while, or as in limited folk who just simply don't have it in them to ever grow a thicker skin - people who will always be tender.

It's for them there does need to be some consideration.  And only for them.

The rest of us just need to grow a spine and skip irritating posts the same way we avoid reading a newspaper article we aren't interested in.

Hey Janine, that's a great idea for a screen name. I will consider changing my name to "weakerbrother".

That way people will try not to make me stumble!

Now that you two are talking to one another directly, I would like to point out that when I am reading quotes, my eyes don't distinguish between "Jaime" and "Janine".  The style of the post usually helps me, however.

When I see "Jaime", I hear "Hi-me" in my head, so that helps me not to think it was me that said... whatever he said.

I see "jai" and I hear "hi".

Yeah, the two names trip me up sometimes too.  There have been times when I thought Jaime said something outrageous, and I thought, "That doesn't sound like Jaime."

Then, I realized... oh that was Janine.    ::whistle::

Many of the so-called "weaker brothers" are nothing more than unbelievers who just want to disrupt Christian forums. I think it's easy enough to tell the difference. A "weaker brother" is actually seeking answers to questions and doubts. The others are just seeking to cause problems. The first one I will try to help; the second one I will ignore. I believe the Holy Spirit gives us discernment if we will just listen and rely on His leading.

A-men there! I have talked to people on subjects I don't agree on, I just don't either-say anything and try and keep out of it if the person seems to have an anger on the subject. If they ask me if I agree, I either, change the subject or I tell them I don't have a comment on the subject. Most people get more angry if we say something against them, but if I knew the person real well, than i'd base my opinion on the subject. Most of the time I just try and stay out of it so there won't be an argument or, make them worse than they already are, again, it depends on if I knew the person or not, than I go from there.  just try to watch what I say or do. W.W.J.D.-what would Jesus do, that's my motto.

Good advice here, but when you have been told that you are an adulteress about 40 or 50 times and are bing driven away form the one topic that really interests you, thEn what happens next? I am referring ot the marriage forums.
(I was totally and 100% faithful to my first husband for 25 years and am now 100% faithful to my second husband. My husband was 100% faithful to his fIrst wife for 23 years and has been 100% faithful to me. Both of our spouses committed sexual immorality.
Still I am called an adulteress). ::frown::
I am now not able to post anything to do witH marriage and marriage issues becuase I will be condemned again (by 2 people who ARENT EVEN MARRIED)

If I were coming from a secular view point, I'd agree with the advice given to ignore them.

But coming from a biblical stand point, this is not to be done.

Most generally, I'm callec in where I help Moderate on another major Site, because the other Mods there, have a hard time controlling thier emotions also.

They call me in, because I talk lovingly and compassionately, yet strait forward, and when necessary, bluntly with them to get info across to them.

In 70 % or better cases, the people who are irritating a thread or posters, will either change to be more cordial, or they leave, because they cannot get to me.

You see, I don't take retorical remarks against as personal, because its not the person themselves meaning this, but the influence of satan or Demons over them convincing them to get irritating, retorical, etc.

I do not know why, but too many Christians have this "mentality" of the world, to think when another speaks out against thier view or them personally, its that person attacking them.

NO ITS NOT. Its Satan, trying to break down a Child of God's WITNESS OF CHRIST to the world or during personal interactions.

Every day, we go thru it, viewing things and thoughts popping into our minds, how to view such a thing, good or bad. The good is of God- (All that is good is of God), and all the bad thoughts are from Satan- (all that is evil is of the Devil).

To ignore another, leaves tem getting more irritated and trying to cause enough trouble to be noticed. Rather than lovingly and compassionately working with them, to possibly allow God to turn thier heart and mind towards Him and away from satan.

Jesus always spoke with His descentors when they interrupted Him. But... Christ used God's Word spoken in Truth, to nulify thier verbal retorts.

But now, people should be given tho, only like 3 chances, and if continue to cause problems, they can be mildly reprimanded first. If does not deter them, ban them then.

Those who think by ignoring another they are doing right, or above them by avoiding confrontation etc, are wrong. After all, Jesus even forgave those who saught to and crucified Him, while He hung on the cross. How is it, we should then "ignore" others who cause problems out of ignorance of Satan's influence over them at the time?

Remember, God even gave "Sodom and Gomorah" several chances to be found someone rightceous in it to save both cities. So, rather than "ignore', lets use what God gave us to try and allow God to do his work on another, but know also when to finally stand firm when its necessary.

Where i help Moderate, some Members question how we do this over the Christian Site. Yet they come out and verbally appreciate the fact we show balance in allowing plenty of freedom to speak out too, within boundaries God has set thru our Pastor for the Site.

We are not going up against another person in a confrontation, but its God against Satan and who is allowed to win, by our knowledge and wisdom of God's Word to be approved in rightly dividing Truth, for loving, compassionate defense of God and His Word against Satan.

Jesus used God's Word correctly when tempted of the Devil, so let us do so also, when confronted by satan thru others.

God Bless!!

Yes, sometimes someone else needs to be told some things.  Yes. for their own good, because they are trapped in sin they cannot see or because they will destroy someone else.  Confrontation is a good thing, in its proper place, applied by someone who knows how to do it, with the right heart, etc.

But, once you speak your piece, many times perhaps if the opportunity is there... you might more profitably apply your corrections elsewhere.

And when others try to apply that process to you, it's a good thing to examine what they have to say.  After all, it might be YOU mired in unseen sin.

But, after you prayerfully consider things, and after you really throw yourself into the Scriptures to seek out everything you can about it... in the end, it is still you and God.  It's you and the Lord, the Father and Son and Spirit.  Those folks trying so hard to straighten you up may be doing the Lord's work, or may not...

All you can do is review everything in the light of Love and the light of the Word, make changes if you are convicted to do so -- bearing in mind what destruction you may cause by shifting everything in the world around you to match every new Scripture principle you think you've found --

And go on growing and serving the Lord.  That's all you can do.

(eta: we're working with a print medium, here; no body language, no tone of voice -- and no abililty to get down in the trenches with the person you are trying to "improve", or the person who is trying "improve" you... no ability to walk a mile in their shoes... no ability to walk beside them.  Cut the people some slack, folks, realise you do not KNOW their situation, and, not being God, you would not know all there is to know even if you WERE with them...)

Just a thought:

Col 3:13-14 Get along with each other, and forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you.

Pr 25:9-10 When you and someone else can't get along, don't gossip about it.  Others will find out, and your reputation will then be ruined.

Ro 12:16-19 Get along with each other; don't be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don't be the great somebody. 17 Don't hit back; discover beauty in everyone.

18 If you've got it in you, get along with everybody.

19 Don't insist on getting even; that's not for you to do. "I'll do the judging," says God. "I'll take care of it." THE MESSAGE:

Romans 15:5 May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all.

1 Thess 5:13 Get along among yourselves, each of you doing your part.

we should be quick to for give as Christ forgave us.

Yet because of our sinful natures we often  get along with those we judge as  disruptive posters  .

this way

Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
