: Why is single-minded anti-Catholicism tolerated here?
: St Cecilia Thu Jan 31, 2008 - 11:27:07
I've noticed that there are some posters here that have a single-minded anti-Catholic agenda that is extremely offensive. It really detracts from the credibility of this discussion site, in my opinion.

I imagine because it's people's opinions, right or wrong, and they are free to express them here (within reason).  Opposing views are also allowed.

Catholics aren't the only group or individuals that have been targeted.  In the time I've been here, I've read posts that are against well-known preachers who are holy men of God, people who have been divorced and/or remarried, Seventh Day Adventists, Mormons, and others.   I was raised Catholic, and although I am no longer a member of that church, I have a high respect for that denomination.  Also, it was the first to tell me about Jesus Christ and His dying to take away my sins.  How can that be a bad thing?

I guess this forum has lower expectations as to the level of a discourse allowable, and slurs are okay. I've been on other forums that are much stricter.

Unfortunately, this refects poorly on Christianity for lurkers and others. This forum is giving me a lower opinion of Christians as a whole.

Slurs are not okay.  I have tried to address this.  However, if someone has good evidence about a doctrine from any church, they are perfectly able to address that doctrine as false.

One thing I do know, is that it has been insinuated by some that we are Catholic sympathizers, and that we haven't done enough and are therefore anti-Catholic.  You can never win.

That is because they don't know "us".   They only know the "us" that they were taught and that is why some of the discussions are assinine, out of touch, and ridiculously inaccurate - revealing more of why I am increasingly more proud to be an "us" and far more frequently  than a "them" than I previously realized.

Who is this "we", "us" and "them", anyway?

"we" define who "they" are as not being "us"       That should clear it up!  :)

'Us' would be the good guys who hold the key of truth. 'Them' is obviously the bad guys, who are in serious error, and are an anathema.

So who are you trying to condemn with your divisive statement of being "anathema"?

Would they be those you have branded in the title of your thread as anti-catholicism?

So... If one (or more) of the moderators were to insinuate that some of his (or her) fellow moderators were Roman Catholic sympathizers, what would that do to the "we"?

I have lots of sympathy for Catholics.  Buddhists too.  I even have sympathy for atheists.

Gary and I were not using the word sympathizer (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/sympathizer) in that sense (see Merriam-Webster's first definition of the word).

Trust me, he has none for you. (cf. John 10:10)
