: jessbuds Thu Dec 04, 2008 - 04:45:44
I am planning to make a small clothe sewing business and my sister in-law will be the administrator, cutter and manager as well. This business will be in the philippines so i am just wondering if you guys can contribute any ideas how to build it and how to market the product.

What are the good items to sew; for men? women, children or all. and how many sewing machine should i buy as a start.

Please help

First, the best advice is generally to start small and build up, so have just one sewing machine to start with.

Second, with just one sewing machine there will be no economy of scale, so go for the sort of clothes for which people will be prepared to pay a good price.  Aim for the fashion-conscious woman who doesn't want to be seen wearing the same outfit as the woman next door.

For example, if making a blouse, do not buy plain cloth.  Buy a cloth with a bold pattern on it, so that every blouse will be that little bit different from all of the others.

It seems that you would only stand a chance if you make good quality, special order type of stuff.  If you are competing against mass produced stuff, the economy of scale that your competitors will have will starve you out.  In short, what Pokhara said.  Who knows?  You might end up with stuff being shown by fashion models.
