I've seen people discuss it online when I would type in a scripture referring to it by people but does anyone know. I read it was described as rejecting God your whole life and not being saved because isn't that really the only thing it could be?

it is blaspheming against the Holy Spirit
Matthew 12:32
Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
Mark 3:28-29

29)but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin

That is correct.
love,
sopranette
ok well whenever I've heard people say blaspheming against the holy spirit it always makes me think of taking his name in vain including the gd word. But that just never made any sense to me.
The context around those scriptures she posted is that the Pharisees had said that Jesus did his miracles by Satan (Beelzebub).
Why the sin was unforgivable is that the Pharisees KNEW that Jesus was the heir. They KNEW he was the Son. Their pride and their position caused them to deny so that they would still keep their place in front of everyone and be looked up to.
It still happens today too, obviously. Leaders lie to protect their positions all the time, including people in the church. They get so used to being looked up to they try to cover their faults so they can still be in charge. Scripture says Pride leads to destruction.
Here is a parable that shows they KNEW he was the heir...
1He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. 2At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
6"He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
7"But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' 8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
And this next scripture goes with it
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?"
41 Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
Here are some definitions of blaspheme/blasphemy:
1. to speak disrespectfully of (God or sacred things)
2. to utter curses [Greek blasphēmos evil-speaking]
1. impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things.
2. Judaism. a. an act of cursing or reviling God.
3. Theology. the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God.
4. irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred
well yeah but I wouldn't think anything is unforgivable as long as somebody turns in the other direction.

Here's a question: If you did not know about the unforgivable sin when you committed it, is it still unforgivable?

what is blaspheming against the holy spirit. I don't really understand. I still can't understand how God wouldn't be willing to forgive anything you did. If you committed the unforgivable sin what' s the point in trying anymore and how do you know if you committed it?

Like many has said, it's attributing the work of the Holy Ghost to the devil.
You don't know that you've committed that sin. Pray about it, God will let you know. Please just don't give up. That's what Satan wants you to do.
God bless
Dear volsfan 1 -
To deny Jesus before men
Mt 10.32-33 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
Blasphemy against Holy Spirit
Mt 12.31-32 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
These were those Jews who had seen all the miracles that were presented to them and ascribed them to works of the devil. Believing that, they would naturally never accept Jesus as their savior, and as there is no other name under heaven by which you may be saved, they were lost and would always be. No one can come to Jesus unless the Father draw him, and this may well have been the straw that broke the camel's back. God no longer tried to draw them. There's only one sin that can't be forgiven and that's not accepting Jesus as your savior.
Idle words
Mt 12.36-37 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Unclean spirit returns to man with seven more
Mt 12.43-45When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
Whosoever does the will of the Father
Mt 12.50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
In Jesus' name - larry2

thanks for the responses. It was something that always confused me as to what it meant. What I read on the internet basically stated that it would have to be a life long rejection of Christ. Because even someone had attributed works of God to the devil and meant it or even worshiped the devil, I would figure anyone can be forgiven as long as they change their ways in their life.

Close! It's not the number of the beast, it's the Mark of the Beast.
All kidding aside, though....when I think of an unrepentant blasphemer, someone like Jim Jones comes to mind. He claimed he was the true son of god. You can even hear recording of his very last few minutes on earth, and he blasphemes right up until the end. I would say he is an example of someone who did not turn to the one true Son of God, was a sinner "unto death", and committed something as close to an unforgiveable sin as I ever saw. It isn't someone saying g-d in a moment of anger, it's something much deeper than that.

There was and 800 number at one time. Then it was changed to 888, then 666. but 666 is future, and 888 is now. So hang in there for about 3000 years, and you will be able to make that toll free call.

I do believe that the unforgivable sin would be marked by characteristics. I see that we're having fun mocking others, but the topic is serious enough for consideration.
1stly, the sin is what Jesus said it is: blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. I do not think you can merely put it down to not believing in Jesus Christ, although that puts you outside eternal life.
I quickly find 2 people in Scripture who "found no place of repentance, though they sought it with tears". Esau, and Judas. Esau sold his birthright, and Judas betrayed Jesus. I think that would be a characteristic of one who had blasphemed the Holy Ghost. I think it would be so because God would refuse to hear them, and they would know of it.
Tell me, what is the "sin unto death" that John writes of [1 John 5:16]? We have an example of someone sinning unto death in Ananias & Sapphira, and Peter said they lied to the Holy Ghost. This happened in the church, not in the old covenant.
I think we would take a lot more care of what we say, if we took these things seriously. Look at the posts above. We've had a lot of fun mocking this thing, but did you stop to think that someone unlearned, and unsuspecting may come here and go away really believing that the suggestions mockingly made here are true? What have we taught them?

She didn't say according to "her," she said according to "some." By the way, "some" would be about 2/3rds of everyone on the planet. :)
1 John 5:16-17-- 16If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. 17All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
It is talking about a BROTHER here and the unforgivable sin.
1 Tim. 3:6--He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil
Again this ties in with what I wrote earlier about the Pharisees. They KNEW He was from God. It is pride that causes us to break our love covenant. It is pride which creates judgmentalism and scripture says if we judge we will be judged. Scripture says if we love others as ourself we fulfill the law. All of this ties in together. In Hebrews 6 when it talks about falling away it says in that same chapter why... 9Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation. 10God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.
it says things that accompany salvation, then says what they are--"the love you have shown people and continue to help them."
I could post many, many scriptures that show that loving others and caring for them is what assures our salvation. Pride always leads to our downfall AS Christians

Amen, and lets separate unrepentance from unforgivable sin- Jesus said whoever does not believe in Him and that God sent Him to die for our sins cannot enter in His kingdom, that is separate from the unforgivable sin, which He felt necessary to speak of apart from just unbelief.
Scripture says God is not that He would lie, so if He deemed it necessary to speak of an unforgivable sin apart from not having salvation due to unbelief then I would believe that they are two completely different things. Cursing The Holy Spirit whom Jesus sent as our guide and helper to salvation and the gifts of God is quite different then just not believing in Jesus, yes both lead to death but with one there is no chance of salvation with the other there is every chance so long as you believe and repent!
Also, as an aside regarding the posts about murder- All of them Moses, David and Paul turned from this sin which they committed and received God's forgiveness- but none of them ever blasphemed or cursed God Himself!
Actually Paul was also a blasphemer before his conversion.

Yes, you are right, there is a difference.
I think this also goes along with what is being said...
47 "The servant who knows the master's will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.See there is a difference when we KNOW. That is what can save us or condemn us. If we know the truth about God and deny it before men we may suffer condemnation
And to add to that is the fact that Paul was a Pharisee himself but what was different was that he didn't know or believe when he fought against christians.

I just don't understand how someone can't be forgiven for anything if they turn and change their ways. Unless the unforgivable sin is continuing in your ways until death.
that would basically mean if someone committed an unforgivable in in some of your contexts what would be the point of trying anymore. I'm taking some of your posts to mean you do something once and that's it. I read something on the internet that was describing it as a continuous thing. I would take that to mean rejecting him until you die therefor not being an easy thing to commit. I also think anyone could be forgiven as long as they change their ways. Just like I said about someone who worshipped the devil. I would even think something like that could be forgiven if they change and truly ask for forgiveness.

To worship the devil is to make him your father. Once you have done that, there is no return. Cain was of that wicked one and Cain was the first murderer - I John 3:12 - 15
Also read John 8:39 - 44 and remember that Jesus was speaking to Jews.
mystery man you could be right but I can't wrap my head around an unforgivable sin. Worshipping the devil would be bad. But I've always thought that even if someone did that at one point and really prayed to the devil and worshipped him that he could be forgiven if his heart was right and he truly turned away from his ways.
there r people having problem wth blasphemous thoughts against God eventually towards the Holy Spirit. I am one of those people, i just cldn't control the thoughts one day they were towards the Holy Spirit. Immediately i felt something droping on my head and believe u me my life has been a struggle ever since till to this day. I feel disconected to God, I am so hopeless. I go to church and wish so much to feel God's presence it doesnt happen. The only thing i have it is His word, i belive every single thing it says, i believe that Jesus came here on earth to die for my sins, I believe that God raised Him from the dead. I believe He is sitted at the right hand of God interceding and pleading wth Him for us. I still go to church, i read my bible, pray, confess the word of God but the is no electricity inside me, it sounds as if it is just words. Sometimes i feel like God doesnt love me but i know it is a lie for He has loved me with an everlasting love(Jer 31:2) .I am scared i might have commited this sin which is eternal, but i know that principalities, angels, death, life will never separate me from His love but i don't have the assurence the of salvation. I feel so empty and dry in the inside. I am married, 33 yrs old and bcos of how i feel and what i think abt the possibility of having commited this sin, i don't have any desire whatsoever to have kids. i feel a person is more safe not to be born at all bcos in this world there are so many trials and tribulations, it hurts, it frustrates, at times i wish i was never born, if it was possible i wld dismis myself. But He is God, sitted in His throne. Before Him no God was formed nor there shall be any other God after Him. Sometimes I become so scared of God. Is this life guys ??????????
