I want to try to convince my doc to give me T3 and T4 replacers, instead of just synthroid..... anyone tried this and had luck with it?
Why do you want to convince him of that? Do you have data to back it up?
Some studies I've read, plus a couple of radio shows hosted by physicians, and my own research. I just want to try it for a while and see what happens. It isn't going to hurt me or make my hyperthyroid. Even though my numbers are supposedly in range, I still have some of the classic hypothyroid symptoms.
I have mild hypothyroidism for which I take one 50 MCG Levothyroxin (geneeric for Synthroid), QD.

I'm taking levothyroxin, too, except my dose is 150mcg.
That is not at all surprising, since the dosage of Levothyroxin is geared to the degree of thyroid underactivity in a given patient.

I know... and mine is pretty much defunct, although interestingly enough, it seemed to work more efficiently when I pregnant (6+ years ago).
I'm very glad my thyroid is only mildly underactive, since 50 MCG is quite enough for me with all the other junk I take. Thank goodness at least some of my heart problems are taken care of by a new bionic SA node (pacemaker).

Dr Flechas is very involved with thyroid issues. Above is an interview link. Below is his web site.

Too much or too little of any glandular hormone will result in a homeostatic imbalance, manifesting itself in some form of sickneee or even death.
My RX ran out and it took me a week to get a refill. I forget sometimes how badly I need the medicine. The worst effect for me (besides the utter exhaustion) is that I turn into a mental case. I forget things, can't think straight, can't remember how to do stuff I know how to do...
Feeling better today. Got my hormones flowing again. :)
Does your pharmacy make a habit of running out of medications? If it does, maybe you should switch to another pharmacy.
Synthroid (levothyroxine) is synthetic T4. The "natural" forms are too variable; you are better off with Synthroid.
Ewigeit, it wasn't the pharmacy's fault. It was mine. I let the rx run out and kept getting sidetracked in calling the doc for a refill.
Snargles, I'm not wanting to replace the T4, just to add T3 to the equation. I know that the body makes T3 from T4, but I've also read studies that indicate some people do not do this well and feel better when both hormones are being replaced.
There isn't a medication in existence which doesn't have untoward side effects for somebody.
Ive been Hypo for nine years and have done everything possible to try and fix it myself. Ive tried all kinds of therapies, some I regret now because of the spiritual conflicts. I too tried to persuade my doc to put me on natural thyroid and replacement t3/t4 to no avail. In general, the doctors do not want to know about anything other than synthetic/generic stuff.
The best thing I ever did, around a year ago, was completely let go and surrender full control of my thyroid to the Lord. This felt very uncomfortable and frightening at first. My last two tests have come back within the normal range and I am feeling a lot better.
Give it all over to the Lord - He created you and is your great physician. He will guide you, heal you and make you more dependent on Him alone - all for His glory.
Bless you.
Well, after all, He IS the Great Physician!
The way I look at it, God gave us the raw materials and the knowledge to create drugs in the lab. Synthetic thyroid hormone and natural thyroid hormone both came from God.
From a medical point of view, the natural hormone is hard to standardize and can vary from batch to batch. The synthetic drug is preferred.
Remember that the same God who created the chemicals that go into Synthroid also created strychnine, which is a deadly poison. Natural doesn't always equal wholesome.
If God grants you good enough health that you don't need any drugs, HALLELUJAH! But if properly dosed drugs can keep you going to serve God, don't sweat it! Just use the medication as prescribed, and thank God for preserving your life.
Say what?! "God created strychnine?" I am appalled by the audacity of someone putting word's into God's mouth, while claiming that he gave us synthetic chemicals, which by the way, are almost always toxic in some way or another. This back-handed attempt to link pharmaceuticals to being something Holy is absolutely inexcusable.
I doubt anyone here knows the true history of medicine and pharmaceutics. Consider this: the word pharmaceutical comes from the ancient Greek word Pharmakeia. Pharmakeia meant "the practice of sorcery and witchcraft."
You are given the free will to take all the potions you want, but don't you dare attribute them to God, or the aftermath to him.
God gave us arsenic, too. Arsenic and strychnine have legitimate uses. Fortunately God gave us the knowledge to separate the legitimate and illegitimate uses.
God gave us plastic even though it doesn't grow on trees. He made oil and we use our God-given knowledge to convert it into plastic. When plastic keeps our food fresh it is good. When plastic fills up our landfills it is bad. The difference is us - how do we use what God has given us.
As to the statement that synthetic chemicals are almost always toxic, water will kill you if you drink too much. Water straight from the river may make you sick if you don't treat it first with chemicals.
Adam and Eve could have survived without synthetic chemicals but even in the Garden of Eden there was one fruit which lead to death.
This debate could go on ad infinitim. The fact is that drugs are indeed toxic, especially if misused; however, herbs and other so-called natural substances can also be toxic, especially if misused. Here I would apply, though somewhat out of context, the scripture that tells us to be wise as serpents but harmless as doves.
