I grew up watching those old 50's-60's movies about the death of Christ....all of them presented the story with the emphasis on the deity of Jesus...that I never did quite realise what Jesus really suffered for us. I mean, the movies remind you of His Godly status (with the soundtrack and mostly unseen face), therefore it's easy to take the whole thing for granted.
The Passion of the Christ really hit home! It focused on His humanity. I cringed at His torture - because the movie tells me He was experiencing each and every pain like I would - as a human. I realised and fully understand what He'd gone through for us.
It is a must-see, even just once. I don't think I'll watch it again.
The Passion of the Christ was a great experience, too serious in tone to be called a movie/flick. At least to me. I saw the movie the year it came out (2004) and it was extremely hard to watch in the theaters. Fact is, Christ went through even WORSE than what was depicted on screen. By and large, I don't think most, if anyone at all, can truly grasp that. I thought it was very well-made. I appreciated the sub-text style. The director, Mel Gibson, did a fantastic job. Took a lot of guts and conviction to pony up his own money to present such a polarizing work of art to the masses. Like you, repeated viewings are just not for me.

Oh it was so difficult to watch. I never knew what "scourging" actually meant - I thought it meant "lashings" or "whipping".....but apparently, it's even worse than that!
Yes, Gibson did an excellent job!

Pilate had Jesus scourged in hopes that it would satisfy the Jews, so that he could release Jesus and not execute Him.
It's like whipping, but designed to be more painful and damaging.
