: How much should we put into physical attraction?
: paidfor1 Sat May 04, 2013 - 20:39:54
Of course the world teaches if you are model thin, no wrinkles, sags etc. we are nobody to pursue. I think the ladies have it worse. Just saying after year of tabloids at the check out line getting groceries.

Call me crazy, but as a middle age male I find it much easier to appreciate the company of "less attractive" than the new selling ideal. Problem is that physical attraction is lacking. Forces me to keep a more intimate advance a possibility. I hate wresting with this as it makes me feel shallow/superficial.

I wish I could fix this about me...ha, said just like a guy, right? Suggestions?

Why would you not want to be physically attracted to someone? God made us whole beings and physical attraction is part of the package. Nothing wrong with it.

Now, if that's all there is in your basket, then we have some work to do.

I agree with HRoberson.  Physical attraction is important.  It's one of the gifts God gave us.  But it should never be the factor we search for when we look for a spouse.  Beauty will fade over time and I would much rather be beside my ugly wife who makes me smile late in my 90's than some hot young thing who I had nothing in common with or despised.

That said, it's much easier to want to kiss a pretty lady than an ugly one.

Now does that mean she has to be modern society's view of pretty?  Absolutely not.  Modern society seems to think that the hottest women look just like 14 year old boys.

If we are going to spend the rest of our lives wih someone, there does need to be that chemistry, but of course 99.9% of us are not like those who appear in magazines,(remembering that they have all been airbrushed anyway). I think that the less we look at those images in mags or on tv, the less we will 'desire' them.
We can have 'chemistry' without that person being thin, wrinkle free or whatever else we think we desire.
My husband and I met in middle age, we were aged 48 and 49, so neither in our prime, but yes, we do have that chemistry despite that.
Also I want to say that God can change the way we see someone, he has done that for someone I know.

The church I attended in college taught that physical attraction was something to be avoided. It could lead to immorality before the wedding and allowed you to lean on the flesh after the wedding in order to stay together instead of having to constantly rely on the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 31:30a  Charm [physical attraction] is deceitful and beauty is vain,

Ya think?

That was not the only thing out of balance there.

They had a lot of good points but also had a few of these doozies as well.

To answer the question in the thread title, if I'm dating you, you had better be putting some effort into physical attractiveness.

Just sayin.'

And the folks teaching that wore burlap birkas. No, that wouldn't work....those seductive eyes would be too enticing. OK, birkas with veils.

I'm with ya on that, brother. Were you aware that two English pyschologists named Viren Swami and Martin Tovée (both men), published a study this past March declaring that men who prefer buxom women are "oppressive sexist misogynists"? I've seen photos of the two researchers and frankly they both look gay. It would their agenda to a T to force men to prefer women who look like boys, now wouldn't it?
