The Sixth Sense is scary?

Well... it was the last movie that actually made me jump in my seat.  Did I leave the movie looking over my shoulder?  No.

My statement is also meant to be a slam on "horror movies", which actually haven't a fear component--just a gore factor.

Since this is the genre I write in, I should step up and defend it, but in truth there's not much to defend. Not much in the horror category is really scary.  The slasher movies go for cheap scares, the jump-out-and-yell-boo type.  Nothing substantial there.  Most attempts at good ghost stories don't hold together (see "The Others").  And if they do tell a good story (such as the aforementioned "Sixth Sense"), the movie doesn't seem to be particularly scary.  "Signs" was scary, but wasn't a true horror movie. I know I'm forgetting a few, but I'm not sure a good, scary, true horror movie has been made since "Poltergeist".  I want to see The Ring, but haven't found it on the shelves yet.

I'd like to see somebody take an old MR James or EF Benson story and turn it into a movie.  I thought the makers of "The Others" were attempting this (with a dash of Henry James thrown in), but they sacrificed the horror aspect of the story for a far-from-original "twist".

Hmm, I saw it, but I did not think it was particularly scarey.  I loved the wierdness of it though.

The Ring[/i](PG-13) & Ringu [/i](NR-Japanese w/subtitles)

When was the last time you've really been scared?  For me it was Friday night as I neared the end of the Japanese import Ringu. [/i] Ringu [/i]was such a sensation in Japan it spawned three sequels in its native land, one in Korea, and an American remake entitled The Ring [/i]
starring Naomi Watts.  Both are new to DVD this week and both will quickly dispatch you to the fetal position in all due haste.

Ringu [/i]scared me so much I've decided I need to destroy what few videotapes remain in my home.  Why take any chances?  And I'm seriously contemplating selling other household items as well.  I've also noticed little idiosyncrasies developing in my behavior, like making sure everything is turned off, locked, and that my child safe in her little tiny bed—checking each about a dozen times an hour.  The fright-factor in this film will linger with you for... well, I'd have to say at least "seven days

It's been a long, long time since I was successfully frightened in a recreational way.

It's been a long, long time since a real, true scary movie came out without a lot of sex & smut in it.

Mike is the scare-master around here.  I'll promote The Ring to him.

Bon Voyage

I think "The Prophecy" scared me more than the vast majority of horror films.

The Ring - saw it twice at the theater.  Makes you not want to be at home alone anymore.
